Western Digital Special Edition 8M Cache Hard Drive

Anyone get one of Western Digital's new Special Edition 8MB cache hard drives yet? Are they faster than Western Digital's regular hard drives? Are they quiet? Thanks, Craig.

I have got one. It performs almost equally to RAID 0.

My two normal WD800s are noisy as hell. Doesn't help that I've got a large vent in the front of my PC60, but I wouldn't imagine the 8mb versions being any quieter. Maybe go for the Maxtor 8MB drive that I've seen advertised. Or even an IBM 180GXP

sorry to go off-topic, but how about these new (to me at least) IBM 180GXP drives?
are they any better than the 75GXP/60GXP/120GXP ? do they have the same reliability issues ?
who makes them anyway, seeing as IBM dropped out of the desktop/workstation hard drive business ?

All I know is that the 180GB 180GXP has 8mb cache. The 120GB version has 2mb. Dunno who makes them...

Go with the Western Digitals. I've got two of the 8MG ones on a RAID array, and it's VERY fast.
I'm trying to get my room-mate to buy 'em off me, so when I build my new system here soon I can go with 3 200GB on a RAID...hope they come out with a Serial ATA version, though...

In May 2002, they reviewed the Western Digital Caviar WD800JB

Hitachi bought out IBM's Hard Disk Drive business in September of 2002, so I'm guessing Hitachi probably makes the new IBM 180GXP Hard Drives.

I have one of the WD 800JB 7200RPM and a Maxtor 100G 5400 RPM and both are equally silent. I can't hear any whine from the platters or clicks from the heads. As for speed, my system is only 333MHz, so I can't really do any benchmarking.

www.georgebreese.com, it's very simple, and the screenshot is easy to read without getting lost like sisoft's load of bull.

ill share my results (when i had the disks working, hah, currently being RMA'd b/c i deleted MBR and managed to do worse)
two Seagate 80GB 7200RPM, (2MB cache i think)
RAID 0
Burst: 92MB/s
Sequential: 45MB/s
using on board Highpoint raid controller.
and that's with 256K buffer
