i wonder if you guys work with CD writers...

currently i do, for backing up pictures and converting videos from VHS to VCDs...

just ordered a dvd writer (Sony DRU-500A), will be coming on Monday.

Yes, not many but some CDR creation/backup -- but I have to make do with the EVIL HP 7200e external 2x drive which refuses to die despite all the crappy Princo discs I've put in it to try to accelerate its demise...... :evil:

I have to use a burner at work occasionally. It's 8x. I thought that was slow, but 2x? Won't the person in charge spend the $50 to buy a fast new Lite-On?

Not really, the going rate for the 52x Litey at the moment is around 30 pounds + VAT, which is roughly $50.

Problem is the PC it's connected to is a crappy HP Vectra 233 as well.... Doubt it would take a 52x :cry:

Not for work, personally yes. I use the CD burner for backup purposes.

You're right, that is a little slow for 52x. You might be able to do 32x if you have a fairly recent HDD in there, but I'm not sure.

It can with old Philips writers... it is possible, with the right discs, to take the laser out of spec, which wears it down quicker. That's the theory anyway... this thing will still be limping along in ten years, I swear :roll:

For some reason the IDE controller restricts CDROM reading speeds to 20x even with DMA enabled... in practise I have not been able to get >8x to run without BURNProof kicking in. Still beats 2x though!!!

Could poor media damage my PCRW1208 (12x8x36)?

Interesting about the CD speeds being limited to 20x - I have the same problem on one of my older PCs. Are your hard drives on a PCI card IDE controller or the onboard one?
