What type of internet service do you have? Dial-Up or broadband?

Broadband for me. Adelphia Cable Modem, which sucks in my opinion. But since I can't get DSL, I won't complain.

BroadBand user D-link cable modem DCM-100 conected to a D-link DI-704P router then connected to several computers.

2Wire DSL (free spare dial-up) ... there's no going back, specially with a $29.99 price !

Was on Road Runner at school, now school over for good, at home with dialup temporarily, broadband coming soon. Ugh, me talk like caveman.

I wonder how consistent the quality of Road Runner is nationwide. How is it in Minnesota, aviationwiz?

I had it when I was in Syracuse, NY and I was quite pleased with it. On the whole, it was solid and fast. I have heard horror stories about other cable providers: Comcast, Adelphia (BuddhaTB can vouch for them), etc. Maybe I should get Cablevision's Optimum Online, it's blazing fast!

I hope to get broadband when I move to Petaluma, CA. Anybody got any recommendations for service there? (Cheap is good, so is suitable for gaming) $40 price range or less.

I voted for broadband because my cable connection is working, but I'm still transitioning from dial-up to cable.

It's great over here in Minnesota. It all depends on how many people have it in your neighberhood.

I went from Roadrunner to AT&T to ComCast.

I can't imaging going back to dial-up. In fact, when my cable goes down (every few weeks for a period of short times), I can't even be bothered to dial up.

When I'm travelling on the road, it's hotel broadband for me!

I know the cost can be high compared to dial up, but the productivity gains are enormous!!

I'm just glad I am not tempted to buy the XBOX Live kit for my XBox!!!

well the situation is like this.
broadband is rather new, and the companies are trying to make headway into the market. so all of the providers are having various deals now.

there are 5 ISPs in the country.
and there are 2 infrastructures - ADSL on the phone lines, there is only one phone company (non cellular) in the country; or the cable (all the cable providers have joined into one company).
all ISPs work with either ADSL or cable, so you can choose whaever combination you like.

the prices are roughly:
256Kb/s download speed: $21/month
512Kb/s: $25/month.
750Kb/s: $30/month.
all these figures are for the first 6 months, after which the rates go up by some $10/month.
(Kb/s = Kilobits/sec i believe)

how does that compare with prices in the US?

For my Adelphia Cable Modem.

I had a deal of $19.95 for the first 6 months. After those 6 months were up, I'm now being charged $55-60 a month, but thats for cable modem and basic cable TV included. I don't remember exactly how fast my download speeds are at, but I'm satisfied with its performance. It's usually the server on the other end that determines how fast you can download. From such big companies as nvidia, I can get regularly get up to 200kb/s when I'm downloading new drivers from them.

That's an excellent price. I pay $85 per month for cable & internet...

ADSL 'G-Lite' from Sympatico. Faster down, than up. I get just under 1m down.

Hoping to convince the wife to upgrade to full ADSL, but it's $49 a month (CDN) about $36 US per month. That's 3m down!

I've had both @home & ADSL, and they're pretty close speed wise (cable being slightly faster down, MUCH faster UP). But full ADSL would be 3x faster than what I was getting with @home, and 4x or 5x faster than what I'm getting with ADSL.

Minus any promotional 6 month offers, it's not uncommon for American users to pay $40/month for 768Kb/s (yes, Kilobits/sec) DSL access. The speed of DSL depends on several things including line quality, equipment quality, and distance to the Central Office (CO). Some DSL plans are averaged at 768Kb/s, the user could get higher or lower downstream throughput depending on the variables mentioned above. Not all DSL plans are alike either; much like in Israel, it's possible to get faster or slower throughput and pay respectively for it. So, to summarize, it appears the price of 768Kb/s DSL in the US and 750Kb/s DSL in Israel are quite similar.

750=768, 750 is sales-people talk. what do they know about powers of 2?

as for the figures themselves, i remain (scynically) skeptical about the throughput speeds actaully being what they are rated at.
i highly doubut that 768 would be the average speed. more likely the top speed attained once in a blue moon...
but still better than 56K dialup!

Add another dial-up user. I'm too cheap even for ISDN (10 Euro/month more). Cable access is not (yet?) available, DSL is roughly 45 Euro /month more with flat rate, volume or timed is less.
Incidentally, more than 50% of my online costs originate here on this board.

It all depends on what plan you get. Most DSL lines in the US average about 700-800Kb/s, but some lines are capped at 768Kb/s. Others are capped at 1.5Mb/s. You have to be really close to the CO in order to achieve the maximum 1.5Mb/s. Some lines are capped even lower at 608Kb/s.

Heck I have been wanting Optimum Online so badly i may move lol. So far knew about OOL for about 2 + years now! Though i may rather go to Calf, Wash, etc to get the 10 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload for only $30 to $50 a month which is even faster! Though i do want a good connection quality too like with low pings, short traceroutes, stable connection, etc! I hope Optimum Online never goes down because they are giving a example of how a cable modem isp should be!
