Saw a new ad float across my screen today:

Warning, an important message from the publishers of this website! You are seeing this message because we have detected that you have spyware installed in your machine...blah blah...Below is a link to a free scanner to download that will find and remove all spyware programs running on your computer: Get the scanner.

Slimy ad to falsely represent that CDRLABS.com is presenting this public service to visitors.

Three words: Zone Alarm Pro. Or one word, if you perfer: Proxomitron.

There is also the Messanger service; is it enabled on your system (2K/XP only)? This is NOT the MSN Messanger instant messaging program, but a "service" the Windows runs in the background. A quick way to check is to open a command prompt and type:

net send 127.0.0.1 hi

If you get a pop-up, it's enabled. It can be disabled by going into control panel->Administrative Tools->Services.

I'm not sure if the firewalls block it; I always disable it right away. Keep in mind this is not a pop-up; a pop-up blocker will not block these, as it doesn't go through your browser. Rather, a web site grabs your IP address and attempts to send the message. It's sort of a poor-mans IM, if you will. The title of the window will (should?) always say "Messanger Service".

Spybot - Search & Destroy is the only way to go for spyware etc.
http://www.safer-networking.org/ is the only true home of this software (there are clones/imitations/thefts of it)

another way to check if the Messenger Service is running on your machine:
GRC.com
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

check the Messenger Spam.

Yeah, I've seen that one too. AdFree seems to block those ads, but it's web site hasn't been up for several weeks.

I haven't been using AdFree any more, either. Since its web site disappeared, there are no more updates, and it's not so effective any more. Besides, I have broadband now, so ads don't make web sites take longer to load. :D

I don't mind ads on Cdrlabs, but this ad pretends to be published by Cdrlabs, very irksome...
