How many songs have you bought from iTunes?

A big "zero"

This seems to be one of the much less succesful threads.

Zero! At 99cents a song it would be just as spendy to get a album as buying it at the store.
When they start dropping prices like movies have they'll start selling even more music.

I won't buy any. At 99 cents, Apple or whomever is ripping people off even more than the recording industry. In most cases, you're going to spend more than if you went out and bought the whole damn CD!

Unless you only want one or two songs.

I'd like to see the songs cost about 50 cents; it would be a much better deal that way.

Good point. I'm just not used to going out and buying a few songs from a CD.

I just purchased my first songs from iTunes. Yeah, the price could be less, but two bucks for two tunes wasn't too bad.

They sounded fine, I was pleased with the sound quality. I wasn't too happy with the .m4p format though. My other devices (iPaq, Rio) won't play them. Supposedly, iTunes will let you make an MP3 CD of your playlist. I'll have to give that a try. If I can easily convert them to MP3s, I'll be happy. (If not, I probably won't be back.)

You can burn a CD and then rip them to MP3 format. While your not supposed to, it should work.

that's why they're having trouble convincing people to buy songs.
if you buy a song you should be able to freely convert it to whatever format you need it in.

Talk to the RIAA about that one, the RIAA forces Apple and other companies to DRM cripple the music.

I will not purchase music online, flat and simple.

I will only purchase music in GENERAL under very strict conditions. Like if it is a Bare Naked Ladies or Weird Al CD (Charlotte Church is ok too).

As far as I"m concerened, as long as I live in Canada and have to pay a piracy fee on every CD-R I purchase, it gives me a few extra rights. Most of my friends have now taken to pirating music just for the heck of it, just to spite the CPCC (the people who institued the piracy levy).

But to be honest, I just don't listen to music anymore

I've been getting my music CD's at my local library.
Up here, it's still legal to copy it. RIAA only has jurisdiction in the USA. As does the DMCA...

if I understand Canadian copyright correctly, it's only illegal if someone sells it or charges for it.

Yes, that worked fine. It's interesting, there is a menu option to create an MP3 CD. But, they won't let you do that on the .m4p files.

Maybe if they kept the prices in line with CD costs per song prices people would consider buying them. When you get rid of production costs of CDs, packaging, shipping, and placement costs, the cost per song must drop dramatically. A CD costs roughly $0.75 - $1.00 per song right now. Given that their costs to get the song to you must drop dramatically, why are they charging the same price?

They also don't have too much investment on stock and storage. It is a per request business as opposed to an anticipating sales business. The cost per song by download should be less than half that of the cost per song via CD. So anyone who is paying a buck for a song is really getting ripped off in my opinion even if they just wanted 1 or 2 songs. If it were down to about $0.30 per song and I thought I was getting a fair price, I would consider it.

By the way, think you might have wanted to include "zero" option rather than assuming everyone is buying them?

There is a none option, but that may have been edited in later by a mod? not sure.

The "None" option is new; it wasn't there last time I read this thread.

Yeah, the RIAA hasn't figured out where the mp3's are coming from yet.

The Library: I've got 3 ZZ Top cd's coming this week, and 2 of the Rat Pack as well.

try your library, it may just surprise you.

Now here's a lawsuit I'd like to see: the RIAA vs The Public Library system.

I won't be buying anymore in the future. I've been buying full CDs online from mp3.com for delivery by mail after online sampling. They are unknown but great groups. They are now going the way of the other deals with downloads for about 99cents per with known groups. So much for me.
