FatWallet.com usually is open to lurkers (people who are not registered), but it went into registered users only mode a day or so ago as their servers got overloaded.

Now many users there want to keep it that way forever - ie only registered users can browse.

I can't believe that those users are so selfish and lame.

It matters to me because I use many computers during the day, from many locations. So it means I have to log in at every PC to view posts, and potentially leave insecure cookies at PC's that don't belong to me.

For my main PC, I also delete all cookies on a daily basis, to prevent potential leakage of info, so I only log into websites like CDRLabs.com when I want to post, not when I want to view topics.

Finally, lurkers do contribute as well. Requiring registration precludes any potential contribution from lurkers who may have that one hot deal or piece of info that may help you a lot.

Imagine if CDRlabs.com became a registered user only website. This website would be much more closed and less diverse.

They've got a pretty solid explanation posted why they do that. It makes sense to me.

I personally stay away from sites that require registration just to view the forums. I sometimes use multiple computers to log onto CDRLabs, and I just like to view the posts sometimes. Same goes for with cdfreaks

I use 3 or 4 computers to view CDRlabs.com, CDRinfo.com, and a few other forums. But I only log into the sites from computers that are mine (like my home PC and my work PC... which is sort of mine).
