Just what the subject says :)
Haven't seen a "desktop" thread for awhile, and I'm bored and I need to test my new image host, so here's my desktop.

Come on, let's see 'em everyone!

also with my specs is it possible to burn dvds in linux? and which linux distro would you recommend for a complete n00b?

im looking for a linux program to act like a duplicator sorta, like burn from disk to disk right away

also what distro is that your running and what desktop, pardon my linux lingo, but im still only a n00b

I'm using Mandrake 9.1 (which is what I'd recommend-9.2 still has some "issues"), running KDE.

I like the look of Gnome, but it's a pain to do some things in that's a breeze in KDE - so I'll stick with KDE!

And yes, K3b can burn DVD's! But there is currently nothing like DVDShrink for Linux. Although DVD transcoding is planned for K3b...

My only K3b gripe: no HD-BURN support!

Oh, huxlund, if you want to use 9.1 to burn DVD's you'll need to download the newest K3b. For some reason Mandrake Update misses it.

Mandrake 9.x also has a nice, slick, and FAST installer. I've used SuSE 9 Pro, and like it, but it doesn't like my monitor and takes FOREVER to install (course, it may just be slow because I'm installing off a DVD+R disc). Xandros Linux and College Linux might also be good choices; Xandros you can probably find on the newsgroups

Huxlund, DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 works under WINE!
However, it can't rip the movie-you have to run it in file mode. However, there are Linux dvd-rippers (ie, decss, K3b *should*(?) be able to act as a front-end for it. It can do dvd-to-divx, so I'm guessing it can just rip).

See here (near the bottom):

thx, im gonna try mandrake 9.2 either tonight or early tomarrow

i wish there were someone right here next to me, to walk me through linux

were i get into trouble is like driver updates and such

Yeah, installing the 3-D drivers is a major pain in the butt. In that sense, SuSE is very nice: it installs them for you durning the install.

The normal system updates are a snap; Mandrake Update works great, at least in 9.1. I had a couple of problems with the updater in 9.2 on my system; but looking over the forums at www.linuxiso.org I didn't see anyone else with the same problems. For me the updater wiped out my menu's - it showed zero apps. And with no terminal, or any other way to start programs, I was basically screwed.

Personally I like 9.1 better than 9.2. But I sure do miss 9.2's SMP kernel!! Hyperthreading is basically useless right now. Gotta find a way to enable SMP in 9.1...

If Linux can get the drivers and software installs as slick and easy as Windows-Microsoft is in real trouble. Hopefully ReactOS will advance to a release canidate very quickly!!

you can probably recompile the kernel with an option to enable SMP.

i think there's a kernel HOWTO in LDP.

I have College Linux running on a machine now. It's pretty neat; easy to use too. It utilizes KDE as well.

Sorry to hear that! Some distros just don't like some PC's. For me, College Linux & Slackware lock up on boot - I don't even make it to the installer. SuSE has an FTP installer you can download; you might want to try that or College Linux...

No- I just have a look at the cartoon when it appears (9 am local time :D). I just post in this forum (apart from 3 or 4 total at CDFreaks).

Hey and congrats on passing 1000 posts (1001 as of this writing)!! :D

BurninMan921: have you tried CDSpeed or especially KProbe (do you have a LiteOn drive?) under WINE?

I have two Lite On's: A 166S DVD-ROM and a 52327S burner.
As for CD Speed, it says it "Can't initialize wnaspi32.dll". I have it in the /windows/system folder on my fake windows drive, and have WINE using the actual file, but still no-go. Maybe If I can get Nero installed...hmm...

I don't have KProbe, so can't test it...got a link?

Yeah really...my "desktop" theard turned into a Linux thread :)

huxlund, SuSE doens't offer their ISO's for download. They have an FTP installer you can download, though. If you poke around in the forums at www.linuxiso.org (in the SuSE section) you'll probably find someone who has it online. Here's one: ftp://avatar.demon.nl/pub/linux/SuSE/9.0/ISO, although it only supports a few people online at a time.

As an alternitive, it's been posted to alt.binaries.cdimage.linux several times recently. Also try something like Kazaa....

There was a lot of discussion here during the development of KProbe, but Karr Wang's site has been down for some time. The best place to get KProbe now is at CDFreaks. See this thread for more information: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?threadid=78353. It also requires ASPI to run. The difference between the update and full setup versions is just the installation of Adaptec ASPI 4.60.

I'd post my desktop- but it's just plain green. Not very interesting. :-?

It's not *THAT* hard to find.... ummm, not that *I* would know... I would never openly admit any sort of action like that

Wow... I *have* hit over a thousand posts now! I hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it! LOL!

The reason I asked about userfriendly is because I am a fairly regular visitor and to some extent poster on the forum there, and I didn't recognize you from there, so I thought you might be posting under a different name... oh well.
