Guys, If any of you install Linux and if it doesn't bootup, it's a common issue with LILO. Just hit the LILO Howto and the solution is there. Below is a link for ref:

When the system doesn't boot, you can boot from the installation CD in diag mode and edit the lilo.conf in in /etc . don't forget to run lilo after you make the changes in conf file, otherwise changes will not be activated.

Btw, personally I always liked the looks of GNome and speed of KDE. But ultimately KDE wins because of it's simplicity and speed. GNome is sometimes confusing and slowww.

hoxlund, as for what you should install from...I assume you have 5 ISO's? You probably have to burn all 5. I downloaded the DVD ISO, so no disc swapping for me

My boot-up issue with Slack/College looked like a kernel bug; it gave me an "invalide ip address" message and froze. Somebody messed up a JMP/CALL instruction somewhere

IMO, KDE is better than Gnome.

Yeah, that's Gnome. I've never really liked KDE much, but to be honest, I haven't used KDE since 3.0 was released. I'm running Debian Unstable on my laptop.

yeah, i thought it was Gnome.
i like the Gnome "apple toolbar" (if that's what it's called) better than KDE's.

I'm giving linux a try using Mandrake Move with my home directory on a 128MB jump drive. It actualy performes well concidering it's running of of a CD.

I noticed that Mandrake Move doesn't seem to be free; does anyone know if they will eventually release it for free?

I actually downloaded it for free you just have to click that your a mandrake club member or you plan to join to get to the download page.

Thanks for telling me about Mandrake Move, downloading it now from a server in WI, just about 20 min. left.

This will be great, running Linux from a CD. I too will be using my USB drive for storage.

Here's my Desktop from Mandrake Move.


Note for those downloading it you will need to use the computer configurator undre mount points use disk drake to format the jump drive with the linux native file system and select home for the type.

Also note when booting from the cd you'll have to go therough the set up of creating a new user every time just mount the jump drive and then select login as diffrent user
and it'll swich then to the jump drive.

Just got done trying Mandrake Move. It has very few games compared to other distros and even other versions of Mandrake, it is slow booting from the CD, Graphic Frame Rates in game are terrible, and it doesn't have a driver for my WiFi card. I should have burned this POS to CD-RW before I wasted a CD-R on it, oh well. Now I remember why I don't use Linux...

Knoppix is just a "live" version of Debian, though, isn't it? Can it be installed to the HDD?

It can be done, but not easily. There are a few howto's on how to do it.

What Wifi card do you have (chipset would be most helpful). I have used both 802.11b and 802.11g internal and PC cards in Linux, and they all have had drivers. I did have to wait a bit when 802.11g first came out for drivers though. Drivers exist, they just may not be integrated into the kernel yet and/or the makers of MandrakeMove/Knoppix/Gnoppix didn't bother to apply the patches. There's also a good howto out there on how to roll your own Knoppix, ie, take Knoppix, customize it, and burn it back to CD.

Too much effort? Maybe. Good way to get your hands dirty with Linux? Probably. Fun for geeks? Definately.

I think it can be installed to the HDD, but I was using it to run a system which has no HDD at the moment.
