cfitz wrote:I was giving serious consideration to AMD, but finally chose Intel. The 64-bit AMDs with top performance are (I never thought I'd be saying this) a little too expensive. Besides, it seems like the AMD processors take the lead in gaming while Intel still holds a lead in multimedia processing (e.g. transcoding). Since I plan to use my computer for multimedia processing and not gaming, my choice was fairly clear. As for which Intel to get, I have decided on a Northwood core since I don't want to attach a refrigerator to my case. I really can't figure out why the Prescotts are going for a few dollars more than the Northwoods right now. Less performance, more power, more dollars - what's up with that? Maybe later when Prescott frequencies increase they will be worth it, but not now, not for me.
My current struggle is chosing a motherboard and memory. For motherboards I've been looking at ABIT's AI7 and IC7-G Max2 as well as ASUS's P4P800, P4P800 Deluxe and even P4S800D-E Deluxe. For memory I was looking at Mushkin but I've read too many stories about not even being able to get into the BIOS without first substituting a stick of other memory and increasing the RAM voltage of the motherboard. I don't want to buy an extra stick of memory just so I can use it once to bootstrap the Mushkin memory. So now I have started looking at Corsair XMS, OCZ LL and possibly even Kingston HyperX. I don't plan on doing much overclocking, so I want to get low latency memory to run at 400 MHz.
