Lunar eclipse

hey MediumRare,
i just got up from a nap and the eclipse is already well under way i gather.

how can i "see" it? i mean the moon is darkened now.
if i go out and try looking Eastward, will i see it?

the moment of greatest eclipse is right about now.

If you can see the moon or where it's supposed to be, you can see the eclipse. The moon isn't conmpletley dark, but should show in a pale gray to red light (reflected earthlight). It's cloudy in the southeast here, so I'm missing it :cry: . Right now (21:06 UTC), the total phase is ending or close to that, so you should see a bit of light showing up on the darkened moon. There's another one later this year, so we can do some "basic eclipse observation instructions" for that one.

Yes I can see it from here. It's a dull brownish colour and the full light is beginning to return starting at the lower right of the disc.

from the beginning, to the moment of greatest eclipse and a few minutes after...
