What is with this new Wireless G w/Speedboost stuff that I have been seeing lately? WTF are they boosting?

That's about what I gathered too.

BTW, why would they even try to boost the G standard anyway, we have a long way to go to even get 54 Mbps over a wireless connection.

It's all marketing. Seriously though, these speedboost things usually do improve performance. The catch is, your router and wireless NIC's all need to be from that company. It's a costly investment for a small boost in performance.

They just make use of Wireless G and B at the same time to increase the speed, no?

Don't think so. There's some proprietary stuff involved, they don't splice G and B together,IIRC. I'm digging up some stuff on this, I'll post if I find anything. Most of the time, they wrap up all their explanations in weird marketing jargon, completely unintelligible.

They use custom compression technology. Like Ian said, you have to use the same brand router / wi-fi cards.

I think it's a waste of money, cause my broadband is at max 4mbps download.

I don't do file transfers from PC to PC via wi-fi because of the inherent security issues - I always use wired connection.

then theres netgear's 108Mbps router and cards:

if you ask me just go standard 54G no speedboosted or super anything

when im helping customers in networking most of them are smart enough and tell me thats its just marketing gimmick

anyone who uses wireless for more then internet browessing is a fool. Just get B since i doubt most people have some kind of connection that reaches over 10mbit

Why? I transfer files to my laptop over the wireless network quite often, it works great.

because it is SLOW still. all the overhead. moving anything more than 5mb is silly. u can have a fast connection of 100mbit
100mbit > 54mbit (that is more like 30mbit at best)

From my experience with my network and friends networks, the 108MB is bunk. The bursts are there, but transfers are more consistent with the enhanced stuff disabled (locking down to 54MB). I used to get dropouts all the time with the Super G enabled on my DI-624.
