talk about monumental stupidity:

NEW YORK (AP) -- A 25-year-old from Georgia who was distraught over President Bush's re-election apparently killed himself at ground zero.

Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits area of the former World Trade Center site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.

It was symbolic alright, symbolically stupid.

Darwinism triumphs!!!

*note: no one should be so upset at the results of an election that they should feel compelled to commit suicide. An election inherently means that there will be one winner and one loser. If you want to committ suicide over that, may I recommend Russian Roulette? At least the odds will be better than 50/50 in that game.

Stupidism knows no bounds... #-o [/quote]

Agreed. Hope he enjoyed his one-way ticket to hell...

Sorry if I sound a little mean, but I just can't really make myself feel sorry for people who take their own life, ESPECIALLY for idiotic reasons...

I think that's a bit too judgemental - I was in a state of depression when I heard that Bush won - but no where near suicidal - although I must admit I have tried (unsuccesfully) to convince my wife that the time had now geopolitically arrived to re-evaluate our present domicile of choice.
However, suicide is taking things too far and is a waste of life

Very...odd, I can think of tons of useful ways he could have channeled his anger and do some good.

Poor misguided fool.

If he felt that strongly, he could always have emigrated to one of 200-odd other countries.

It's not as if Hitler/Stalin's in charge anyway.

What we have here.......... is a manifestation of self-imposed, retroactive birth control.

I agree with ramlin that your post is too judgemental.

I am sure he had other problems/issues as well.
If you believe he killed himself only because of the election result, I think
you're taking the newspaper story to be the gospel.
The writer doesn't know the victim; I am sure there is a lot more to it...

I DO feel sorry for someone who felt that life was no longer worth living; I am glad I don't feel the same way...

That is all I'll say about it.
