If you're having problems with Windows XP stability, you either have a hardware problem, a massive amount of spywareor a virus, or you're not doing something right. Or you're running an ancient piece of software known to be incompatible with XP (i.e., Easy CD Creator 4.x or earlier).

If you're having a problem with Windows 98 or Me, you should upgrade to Windows XP. By upgrade, I mean format your system and install from scratch, not run the "upgrade" option.

If you run Linspire, you'll probably have more compatibility issues with Windows apps. It's a version of Linux designed to have some Windows compatibility, but just how much is debatable. There really aren't any huge issues with the operability of Windows XP as long as you stay up to date on your Windows updates, keep the firewall enabled, and run a good virus scanner like you ought to (plus being intelligent enough to avoid adware/spyware helps).

From what I heard they just changed the name to Linspire a long while back.

Lindows sucked, and therefore I wouldn't trust Linspire either. Also, I think the icon of the runner that Lindows/Linspire uses for their CNR is a direct rip-off of the Healthy Choice runner. Pretty lame, if you ask me.

You can get it for free from the company if you know how:

1.) Go to http://www.linspire.com/btorder
2.) Click Apply Coupon
3.) Enter code "lindows" without the quotes.
4.) Price drops from $49.99 to $0.00
5.) Check out.
6.) You do need to register with linspire to get the support for this product and access to the registered forums. Use the bittorrent plug-in to download the .ISO, and you're good to go.

Lindows got sued by Microsoft and had to change their name. Their company was 'Inspire' so they renamed Lindows to Linspire.

I got it free with a coupon like that. It seemed to run ok I just never seem to run it.

They also have a cd version which is for booting a freestanding run of Linspire right off the cd drive.

That'd actually be similar to Bart' Pebuilder I guess.

For a compact OS that boots/loads everything off a CD, I would recommend Knoppix. Yes, it's Linux. :)

I got that version too.

Pretty neat.

I just hated the perpetual beta-ness of Linux, so I've avoided it so far.
Besides, my wife has a hard enough time working with XP...
