Anyone Buying a PSP

Anyone planning on buying Sony's new handheld? I'm still up in the air about it. I like the PSP's ability to play UMD movies, but I rarely played my GBA (or my XBox...)

I was all set to buy one, and the W I F E factor kicked in..."no toys for me".

I intend on getting one, looks pretty neat. I think it's something I'd actually use, and enjoy.

I'm not. They're $375 CDN.

But one of my trainee's bought one. He was all wound up about it.
It's kind of odd, watching a 28 year old male getting all excited about a toy that a teenager would love.

If I understand it right, the PSP does not even play the PS games at all.

I'm just waiting for all the "free PSP" spam.

My Xbox is collecting dust at the moment, so I'll pass.

Funny thing (in terms of coincidence, from my point of view) that you started this thread now, since I just noticed the PSP mentioned on another forum today; I haven't been keeping up with video game systems recently.

I've got a DS, had one since December when I bought one while I was on holiday in Japan :)

It's great, but that PSP (I played it quite a bit at the Sony Centre in Tokyo) has to be seen to be believed. I'd have bought one but they were sold out everywhere :(

It's a great toy and a must-have if you have money to burn

I just got back from Target, got mine. They had plenty of PSP's. Best Buy had a line of about 25 people at 7:30 from what I hear (open at 8 ) and Target only had about 5 people at 8. Looks Great!

Yeah, I think I'm going to wait to buy a PSP. The fact that Sony thinks dead pixels is acceptable is crap

Got mine this afternoon right before work at Toys 'R' Us. I got it just before the kiddies got out of school and finished snapping their stock up. Nabbed a copy of 989's NBA too and was dying to get home to power it up. It is prettty slick! Great screen and nice feature set. I would have picked up Tiger Woods Golf, but I have a $10 BB rewards cert and I am gonna buy a Gamers GC for another $5 off so I can get it for $35 instead of $50. I now have to decide which of my nephews will inherit my GBA SP and the 15 or so games I have for it. I already have too many toys to play with on trips with my laptop, my Archos , and now this - can't carry any more in my carry-on :-({|= . Hope we see a UMD burner someday as MemStick DUO Pro is kinda pricey for the 512Mb and 1Gb sticks that will be needed for MPEG-4 transfers, of course I do have 20 GB on my Archos but I just can't help myself in trying out a feature ](*,) . I imagine we won't see a burner though as they could have used MD format discs for this if they had chosen to and instead went with a new format for anti-piracy purposes. Anyways, enough rambling from me! If anyone else buys this and wants to review any of the launch titles please do so. I really want to hear about the sports titles and the Metal Gear Acid title but would like to know opinions on any others that you all may have.

I'll save my money, thanks. :) The only portable game system I ever bought was GameBoy...the thick, original one. It still works great too!

You know what the answer to the PSP is? The laptop. It can do everything the PSP can and so much more. Plus, it's portable as well.

Plus, it costs a crap-load more, and you can't use PSP games... Laptops were never very good for gaming, especially when compared to a desktop or something like a PSP or DS.

Anyways, my friend came over and I tried out Metal Gear Ac!d, not a very good game, since it's card based. We couldn't play online with Twisted Metal: Head On, but by reading different forums, it seems not many people can.

Also, there are no games that support game sharing yet, where you can use just 1 UMD for a multiplayer gaming session over WiFi. We didn't have multiple UMD's of games either, so we were out of luck.

Laptops = bad when compared to desktops for gaming

Laptops = good when compared to PSP or DS for gaming

Reason: You can get newer, better technology in a laptop than a PSP or DS. Plus, although painful, laptops can be upgraded. Not true for the PSP. It's just like comparing an Xbox or PS2 to a computer; the computer will win hands down. It's dynamic, baby! Sure, puters cost more than gaming consoles, but you get what you pay for.

Game sharing is old hat on computers. While people are scrambling to find PSP games that support multiplayer, I'm whaling away on my laptop connected to my LAN. Let's not forget about WAN either. Quake, anyone? Yeah...so...I kick it old school.

If you're gaming at home, you might as well use your computer, Xbox, PS2, etc. I won't disagree.. there are better options than the PSP or DS.

If you're on the road though.. something like the PSP is perfect. My laptop goes almost everywhere with me and for a number of years, so did my NGP and GBA. Why? Ever try hauling out your laptop on a bus, car or plane, let alone play a game? Total pain in the ass, even with a small laptop. With something like the PSP its easy to pull it out, play a little bit and then put it away.

What I meant by game sharing was having 1 system, 1 PSP, to have the game, and the other doesn't need it. I'm not aware of any PC games like that either. There are plenty of PSP games that support multiplayer if you have multiple UMD's, and also, let's keep in mind, it just came out.

Gaming on a laptop... it would almost have to be a desktop like setting, having plenty of room for it, and the standard NW B752 seat pitch barely gave me enough room to comfortably play MS Pinball.

Never heard of Diablo? Starcraft? Warcraft?

Blizzard specializes in games that can "spawn" multiplayer copies

It looks like Sony wants people to send in their PSP's if they see dead pixels.

http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000880037820/

This is going to suck if stores pick up on this. "Sorry sir.. you can't return your PSP for dead pixels. You'll have to send it in to Sony and wait a few weeks for a refurb."

MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum just hit my doorstep and an ATI Radeon X800XL does tomorrow to go with it. That's my budget for awhile as far as toys go, especially as we have to find a realtor in the next couple of weeks (looking for that first house). I paid for it selling my Neo 2 Platinum, Geforce 6800, and some other miscellaneous parts, as well as a little freelance work.

The local Toys `R' Us had the PSP out the day before it was supposed to be released. Was getting a birthday gift for a friend's son and saw it.

Have fun, I noticed it on a few sites, including CDRLabs.
