Are people being taught to spell them like this or is a product of that whole "spell it like it sounds" fiasco?

I hear you on this one.

My spelling is horrible, but at least I don't write like these 14 year olds these days.

Ebonics is dead. Thankfully, it never really got off the ground.

Unfortunately, the kids are watching music videos these days of 'gangster' rappers that are mostly illiterate. And naturally they're trying to speak like them now.

I gave up listening to the radio, when I could no longer understand what they were singing about-and it was in English too.

I'm going, too. As soon as I find my salt shaker. I need to have him autograph it.

'Ridiculous' I've seen people mispell... but how are you seeing 'laptop' misspelled?

The current "word" that really peeves me is "conversate"

well, it's probably very common in Arabic-speaking countries! no 'P'.

Back on topic: I think I'm onto something. This generation is the 'Hooked on Phonics' generation. Maybe they're just going back to what they know. Sound it out and type it in...

Well sorry for spelling the words incorrectly for so many years before the Americans showed us the error of our ways...

I could go on all day about bad spelling, it seems that the younger generation of today are all illiterate. Damn txt spk, it drives me nuts, m8

Worst of all is the admin assistant at work, who handles our work expenses. Except the silly tart can't spell the word "expences (sic)"

People mess up "lose" and "loose" all the time as well. This is only one of the many misspellings that bug me. If there is a word I am hesitant about spelling, I'll look it up on http://www.m-w.com. There really is no excuse to mess up on spelling so often.

I know exactly what you're talking about, but for some reason it still bothers me to see it. Especially in US places. Think of it this way, our way usually has less letters in it, which makes for easier writing... plus our words seem to be more "phonetically pleasing".

As for common mistakes, mixing up "affect" and "effect" is one I see A LOT. Some people need to look at the dictionary sometimes...

As for color vs colour, it depends on your accent. In my Northern English twang, the word is pronounced similar to "cullah" (with the "ull" as in "bull"), so whilst the English spelling just about fits, the "or" in US English just seems wrong. Imported Japanese TVs and VCRs used to confuse and irritate me as a small child with their "incorrect" spelling of colour (especially as I was reminded of the UK spelling before each programme in the 70s as each station proudly proclaimed their colourness in huge letters before each programme, thus:



... before I understood the differences between US and UK English. I still think it was lazy of Sony etc not to bother replacing the sticker on the front of the TV

(And yes, the North-East accent can be a bit harsh at times )
