"Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

Ten days suspension isn't an undue hardship?

That's quite a lot of work to make up in the course of a schoolyear. If the kid has a record for being a good student, I'd call this crap.

Then again, I'd take the student's prior record heavily into account on this, and if it isn't good, that would be an issue too. Even so, in our district, insubordination (which is what this appears to be) amounts to three days; ten seems downright ludicrous.

Our district begain to allow cell phones a couple years back; I've heard they're seriously considering whether they can revoke that without having legal repercussions. Personally I can see very few good reasons for a student having a cell phone in a high school in the first place, and I can see several bad ones.

I couldn't believe this story either!
I was thinking of posting it at the time to get reactions.

I also thought it was ironic that they said "we're not trying to cause him undue hardship with the 10 day suspension".

1) He couldn't finish speaking with his mother in Iraq during lunch break. Imagine if it had been their last conversation; to have it cut off for the reason in question would have been awful.
2) 10 days???? That is ridiculous in itself for something this minor.
