DO NOT DISTURB feature for a Cell Phone

A few weeks ago I jumped on a Radio Shack Pre-Paid Cell phone deal because they said either the phone or the service (Virgin Mobile) would do what I wanted. It wouldn't and I returned it the next day.

What I wanted was to have the phone watch the caller ID and check a SPECIAL Phone List in the phone. If the ID didn't match a special number the phone would not ring.

I work nights and sleep mornings and evenings. I keep my phone off but have always wanted to let my boss call me incase of emergency.

After returning the phone I called 5-6 cell phone manufacturers and gave them the idea, which they all seemed interested in.

Now I'm slowly looking/watching for this solution. I just learned a week ago that Hawaiian Telcom has a service called DoNotDisturb that would do it but it limits the allowed numbers to 12. Since this is for a land line it suddenly showed me that this may not be the solution since folks not on my list to leave a message on my answer machine.

So;

1) If you know of this service please drop me a note here.
2) Also, if you know of a really good cell phone review site please leave that here too.

Thanks, rich

When I want do not disturb in my phone I set the wide system ringtone to a silence mp3/amr one and the contact that can call with a diferent ringtone (louder one preferably). Also when I dont care about who is calling but I want someone to do not disturb I set his contact with the silence ringtone. Also I have silence but with vibrate ringtone. Also my phone has the accept call with lists.

#2 search the forum, there was some discussion about cellphones a while back with links.

#1, i have a Nokia 6100, this (and newer) models have what they call Groups, you can assign each contact (phone number) to 1 of 5 groups or so: friends, family, business, vip, other etc.
you also have what Nokia calls Profiles. they control how the phone rings/reponds to calls etc.
so you can set up a group with a limited number of members, and then create a profile in which the phone only rings for calls from the people in that profile and won't ring when anyone else calls.

Hi, thanks so much for the reply. Could you please let me know the model cell phone you have. I'll go get the .pdf manual if available and read up on it.

Thanks a bunch,
Rich

Thanks for the reply, I'll go get the manual (pdf) if online and read up on it. Maybe I can do this. I'd love a new toy!

Thanks again, Rich

Nokia USA:
http://www.nokiausa.com/phones

can't find the 6100 there (old and outdated?)
check out 6230
http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6230
you can download the manual:
http://www.nokiausa.com/support/phones/ ... 30,00.html
http://nds2.nokia.com/files/support/nam ... _US_en.PDF
it works a bit different than what i know on my 6100, but:
Caller Groups - p. 79 of the manual
Profiles - p. 81 of the manual. especially the last option "Alert for".

EDIT:
just found the 6100 on the site.
here's the manual:
http://nds2.nokia.com/files/support/nam ... _US_en.PDF
Caller groups: p. 54
Profiles: p. 89.

ps. i use this feature similar to what you describe you need.
i'm a teacher and i don't want the phone ringing when i'm teaching. but i want the wife to be able to reach me incase of emergency (got a baby) so:
i have a Group dedicated just for the wife, the only numbers in it are the home number and the wife's mobile
i have a Profile dedicated just for the wife, set up so that only calls from above Group are allowed to ring.

dodecahedron and Alejandra, Thanks so much for all the work on the replys. That's super. I'm very greatful. I'll be spending the night at work tonight reading all this. I wasn't into cell phones until I got that pre-pay one for only a day and saw all the organizational tools inside like contacts and a planner. Now I want one of those puppys. That deal with virgin mobile was onl $6.66 a month or 20 bucks every 6 months. But it was terribly expensive to actually call with. 25 cents a minute for the first 10 minutes each day and 10 cents a minute after that. It did however fullfil the desire to have a 'cheap' cell phone, but it would not do this filtering. I just looked at it's .pdf manual. It was an Audiovox 8610; which was eye candy for me.

Thanks again.

Hey dodecahedron, with all this 'ring' info I guess this ......

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them"

.....could almost be a Nokia Ad.

::grins::

Thanks again!, Rich
