Microsoft wrote:When burning your DVD’s please do so at 1x or 2x and CRC them when done using the CRC utility posted on the Connect site. The customer experience improvement telemetry that we’ve been getting back on Beta 2 shows that not quite three quarters of setup failures are the result of a failure to read from the media. Testing shows that burning at slower speeds greatly increases the chances of a good burn.

I think kg_evilboy at CD Freaks puts it best:

Microsoft was owned by an idiotic fallacy.

credit goes to jamieshea at CD Freaks for finding this! =D>

While I think they were pushing it a bit, I think they should be given SOME amount of credit for bringing up the issue of burn speed! 1x is overkill, but people just pop their Memorex media into their BTC (OEM) drive and burn at the fastest speed.

It's an easy way to maybe help some of that issue. It would've been nice if they said "get better media, and burn slower, 4x or 8x", but this is a start. (kinda lame, but a start)

considering that 1x and 2x burning speeds aren't even OPTIONS on 99% of all media.... this is just stupid.

This was semi-true with CD-R media but in a lot of cases you're probably going to get worse results burning to 16x rated media at these low speeds. They just shoulda said "Hey you cheapasses, stop buying crap media!"

I thought I posted a similar reply, but I guess I didn't.

BenQ drives have an option for 2.4X... but it's a generic strategy that is nearly guaranteed to produce poor results.

Microsoft really dropped the ball on this one. With 90% of modern media on modern drives, 1X/2X is almost guaranteed to produce worse results than rated speed! Perhaps Microsoft should have instructed people throw their shitty media out the window!
