BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's High Tribunal on Sunday found Saddam Hussein guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to hang for the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the city of Dujail. The visibly shaken former leader shouted "God is great!"

Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court, were sentenced to join Saddam on the gallows for the Dujail killings after an unsuccessful assassination attempt during a Saddam visit to the city 35 miles north of Baghdad.

The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals panel which has unlimited time to review the case. If the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

Anyone else have a feeling that this is going to get held up in appeals court for like the next 5 years?

Wouldn't it be nice if politicians were like optical media? Scan 'em,
if they scan bad, throw 'em out and try another one.

lol.. I think the majority of them would scan as being bad.

I hope the Iraqi government is prepared for the violence Saddam's death is going to bring. They're going to make the asshole a martyr.

The problem is, the vast majority of people who wish for the power of political office have no business wielding it.

Those who are probably the best suited for political office are the least likely to run for it --they can be far happier in other professions, and it isn't worth the complication and hassle. And many who start fresh into politics corrupt within several years of being exposed to a brutal system.

The only solution is, to quote someone famous, "Politicians are like diapers --they should be changed frequently, and for the exact same reasons".

How do you suppose it happened that they came up with The Verdict only 2 days before US midterm elections?

The same way they magically lowered gas prices. I wouldn't be surprised if they jump up 50 cents tomorrow.
