I don't know if anyone else is getting hit by this storm but we got 6" last night and according to the weather dweebs, we're supposed to get another 10" tonite. If that wasn't enough, we have 20-30mph winds.

Of course, my wife has to pull her car out of the garage this morning before I clear the drive way and gets stuck in a 1' high snow drift. I don't mind snowblowing, but digging a car out sucks.

These pictures aren't blurry.. that's the snow.

Not a fence or trees to break the wind, so drifting will be a problem.
Such is the joy of a new subdivision.


We're to get the storm as well on Sunday morning. I'm on nights Saturday & Sunday. I can hardly wait for the carnage on the roadways.

Yeah, its like the frozen tundra out here. The roads are the worst part. Your driving along and all of a sudden there's a 2' drift.

time for an AWD vehicle...my next one will be a quadcab Dodge Ram 1500, 4x4.

Around here, I wouldn't drive in the winter without 4wd or at least AWD. My wife's car has AWD but it sucks in deep snow. I throw mine in 4low and it will go through anything.

A possible 16" total? 20-30 MPH winds? Peanuts!

Not to make light of the situation, since believe me, I know what a lot of snow and high winds can do! I've experienced both during several winters in Upstate New York, including this one. The most ridiculous part about this winter is that my area of Upstate New York has recorded almost 100 inches of snow! For a stretch the last two weeks, we've had back to back days of 12" - 24" or more of snow. Sadly, I don't even own a snowblower! I had to shovel all that white stuff! That's my own fault though.

*knock on wood* This week has been relatively mild, but winter isn't over yet, and that's what frightens me! Global warming what?

I feel bad for our neighbors north of the border, like Spaz, who have undoubtedly received more snow than us in the States.

snow? we had a major ice storm yesterday, we closed down our store

one lady got hit in the head by a big sheet of ice that fell off the building

we also had a store meeting at 8am yesterday, in coralville store one kid going to their stores meeting rolled his car 3 times and is in critical condition

Thanks to the wind, the snow wasn't too bad this morning. The snow on the driveway was only 10-12" deep.. until you got to the end where the plow deposited a 2' wall of solid ice/snow. It took forever for the snowblower to chew through that.

Its 5pm. I've been awake for 2 hours.


The weather is here & I have a 45 minute drive into work for the night shift again.

I despise plows that dump all the snow at the foot of my driveway too! A major pain the ass!

As per Spaz's photos, while it's no picnic to drive in the snow, if I have to do it, I prefer other cars' tires having carved a path for me to drive through. The first picture looks decent, the second is getting a little uglier.

Usually, around intersections, the snow clumps a bit from cars turning left and right. Already this winter, I slid off the road into a ditch because of this clumping effect. Luckily, my car only ended up halfway in a ditch, not all the way in. No damage was done to me or my car, but I did need to call a tow truck. If anything, I thought the winch on the tow truck was going to damage my car more than sliding into the ditch! Man, those things are powerful! If I had a Dodge Ram 1500, 4x4 with 8,000 lb. winches, as Slim mentioned, I probably could've pulled myself out!

Anyway, about 57°F and sunny here.
Gotta' go out and pick some oranges and lemons off the trees - rain if forecast for tonight and some will fall anyway.

My first vehical was a 42 ford Jeep, second was a 41 1/2 ton military Power Wagon pickup. One day I was fooling around in our backyard before all the other houses in the neighborhood were built driving around a small brushy tree lined area that was all overgrown and muddy. I started between some trees and hit a real soft mud hole, next thing I know I was spinning and sunk axle deep right up to the running boards/bumper. I had the military Braden 5000lb PTO winch so I picked out a nice sturdy looking small tree and hooked her up. Started to crank up the winch and engine revs, started to inch, then the whole tree came PLOP right outa the ground, root ball and all. Almost fell on the truck and everything. After some nice choice words and spending some time crawling around in the muck untangling the winch cable I found a BIG tree and got myself out.
I still miss my small military fleet of 4x4's. I sold the Jeep to buy the Power Wagon, or at least pay off the money I was loaned to get it. Later I sold the Power Wagon to buy the Dart when it dawned on me I might need a normal car to do things needed in life. I was 18 to 20 at the time and always wanted those 2. It was cool for the short time I had both, lots of great memories of tough old iron that was hard to stop.
