As some of you know, my wife and I are expecting our second child in June. As we recently found out, its going to be another boy. To make a long story short, we're having a heck of a time deciding on a name. She likes lots of them... I don't like any. The only one we semi agree on is Drew. The kicker is she wants to name him Andrew and call him Drew. I keep telling her that everyone will call him Andy.

Anyway, I'm looking for serious suggestions. Please no Megatron, Optimus Prime or Darth Vaders. I really need some help choosing a name. Oh yeah.. no Ryan or John either as that's my other son's first and middle names.

Plextor, Lite-On, LG, BenQ, Pioneer...

Serious ones:
Josh, Edward, Nick, Ethan...

I feel your pain Ian. We too are expecting our 2nd child (due in late May). We don;t know what it will be, and we both like it that way.

We have settled on a few girls names, but we are stumped as for boys names. The ones that my wife likes, I don't like, and vice-versa. THe one boys name that we both agreed on was Sean, and that we used when our son was born. I told my son that since we liked the name Sean so much, we would name the baby Sean if it turns out to be a boy, and that we would call him (our son) "Hey You". To test this out, every now and then, I say "Hey You", and he always (never fails) says "What dad"? I then proceed to tell him that our plan to rename him is going off flawlessly, because he always answers to "Hey You".



The one boy name that we agreed on was Patrick, and my sister in-law sort of ruined that for me by saying that it would always remind her of Spongebob!

Certainly not Monte, with or without the LDS.

I agree that the name is hyperbolically awesome. There are only two people who ever mess with Thulsa Doom:

I mean, seriously, IT IS THULSA DOOM. Who is going to mess with a dude who is the namesake of this guy?


And if it is Conan or Red Sonja, so be it. They are both awesome.

It would be kinda cool to go with a Croatian name but I haven't found too many decent ones. I guess we could go German and call him Gustav or Helmuth or something.

Some people need major meaning in a name. For me, it's more important that a name pass the playground test. When you think of a name that sounds good, think hard for a few minutes if any obvious K-12 insults can be made from said name. If they can, scratch the name and find another.

So, my names tend to be fairly simple (no Ivy League stuff), but solid. James would be a good example. I would have said Jonathan, but you already have a John.

Have you thought about naming him after your favorite call help/desk guy?

I too have tried applying this philosophy when trying to pick out names, my wife is not as concerned as I am though. Along these lines, I also think that the name should sound right with our last name (Martin). I jokingly told my wife that I really liked the name Austin, with no middle name.

She didn't get it, so I had to explain it to her.

Yeah, the playground test is a big consideration. I don't want them to have a weird name like Ian that while simple, no one could pronounce correctly as a kid. Not to mention, my last name is bad enough.

OK, I'm in the game now with the playground rules.

I want my kid to have a unique name, even though it might bring some playground shenanigans his/her way.

Why name your kid the 5 millionth John (or similar) on earth? (no offense to the John's out there, just my opinion for my own kid)

Ian, you might try watching some of your favorite movies and picking out some interesting / good sounding names that stand out. Take some of those names and alter them a bit if needed to make them more feasible or sound better. The name-verse is limitless, you just need a little bit of good inspiration! (and I hope this thread will give you a tiny kickstart)

The entire reason the father named the boy Sue was because the father knew he wasn't going to be around to raise, teach, and comfort the child. What do you think happens when you name a boy Sue and the father stays around? That boy brings home boyfriends.
