Dust off your flux capaciter, the DeLorean is coming back in 2008.

You may remember a post we did back in January about the DeLorean Motor Company selling flux capacitors and hover conversion kits on its website. The fictional for-sale items were a joke that got a lot of attention for the Texas-based company that's been selling old DeLorean parts and making new ones since 1995. That business has been going like gangbusters, so much so that the company has announced that it plans to begin selling new DeLoreans next year for $57,500. They will be built by hand at the rate of one to two cars per month, and be nearly identical to the originals. The company will update the interior as well as provide stronger, more modern engines, and it may go further to address other shortcomings of John DeLorean's original design.

Sounds like fun. I hope they don't keep them fully original --I'd love to see them redesign the front end for a more sleek, aerodynamic look.

Of course, if you can't do your own maintenance, it's probably not a good choice.

They had an article in the paper about this. The new versions are to be built using 80% original parts and 20% new parts. The interior is to be updated. They're going to use carbon fiber for the bottom of the car (can't remember the specifics for this) and it is to have new more powerful engines.

I agree about the front bumper, I never did like that design. They should redo it making it more aerodynamic. I would also like to see the engine in the front and a "hatchback" type of rear window trunk for the back. I don't know what is it with cars, but I always think the engine should be in the front and the trunk should be in the back. I can't stand having the engine in the back or the "mid" design. It's like going to Europe and the driver is on the right-side of the car instead of the left-side of the car. It drives you so insane that you want to tear out your hair. ](*,)

I think it depends on the design. Most mid/rear engine designs were done for weight distribution/stability/handling purposes --the Toyota MR2 is a good example of this, as are several Porsche's. Only problem is, sometimes it makes for a great driver's car, but a pain-in-the-rear mechanic's car.

OT, but of the cars I'd like to see brought back into production, the Mazda RX-7 would be my choice. I thought the early ones were pretty cool.

If Universal is smart, they will find a way to tie in this new Delorean with the HiDef release of Back to the Future. That'd be awesome :D

I'm surprised Back to the Future has not yet been announced for release on HD DVD as of yet. Spielberg didn't direct it, so it is possible we will see this trilogy on HD DVD sooner than later...

Let's hope they don't make the car in a factory infiltrated by the INLA this time
