Finishing The Basement - Stage II

Back in the fall of 2006, we started finishing the first half of our basement. We're now onto the second stage of the project, adding another bathroom and a bedroom/office. The walls were framed earlier this week and today the plumbers and HVAC guys came in and did their thing.

The electrician comes on Monday and then I need to run CAT5 and coax to the bedroom before the drywallers come. I'm debating whether or not I need to run some to the bathroom so that I can watch TV while on the throne.

Hey, add the cable in the throne room! Lol! I have been helping my parents remodel their house for the last two months and it has been a challenge since I'm the one doing most of the work. It started with insullation of the ceilings, new tiles, floor boards, moldings, new kitchen, painting whole house, and will be doing the two bathrooms new. Of course, demolition of the old stuff was a pain to say the least. Removing the old tile was a pain and had to rent a jack hammer to take care of that. I too had to run new cable lines and new phone lines with jacks, but that was easy. Prior to that, the house got rewired. Almost done but still have the tiling of porch and patio area in the backyard. Least I can do for them. Your basement looks like it will be a nice place hang after its done. Here in Miami we no basements...kind of miss my old days growing up in Jersey. Send pictures when you get done.

The electrician and drywallers came this week so I didn't have a lot of time to do wiring. I ended up doing two runs of CAT5 and one run of coax to the bedroom.. which is a good thing since I almost ran out of cable.

I'd post some new pics, but there are no lights installed at the moment.

Here's where we are so far. I'm not really sure what to do with the floor in the bathroom. We put laminate in the bathroom and there's a gap by the tub. It's really too big to caulk and I don't think a caulk strip is going to do it either. Any thoughts?

Hey Ian. How large is the gap? If its more than 1/4 inch, then yes, you should not use caulking to fill in this gap. Have you considered installing floor boards in the bathroom? You can use the same type you are using in the other pictures. Or they have some that are made from laminate. But I would go with the wood floor boards. Let me know how you work around this issue.

Yeah, we're installing trim in the bathroom, which will take care of the gap between the floor and walls. I bet they make something similar to go on tubs. I just haven't found them yet.

You mean putting something at the edges where the tub and bare wall are? Well you may consider a bull nose tile that has a decorative design. We just finished my parents bathroom and used the bull nose tiles to finish wall tiles.

No, there's a small gap on the floor betwen the tub and the laminate. I'll try to snap a few pics tonight.

Okay, here's a picture. The gap is about 1/2 an inch at the widest.

You might want to try cutting small slivers of the tile to fill in the bigger gaps. If any water gets through if theres any wood or things underneath it could rot, but that is a basement so maybe it's all concrete anyways.
Not a expert but getting everything to align up right when doing tile or brick can be fun. Sometimes when we redo a chimney we have to to a layout then cut half bricks or whatever to get everything to the right size we want and make it look like it was done on purpose. #-o

Okay. The gap is between the tub and the floor, right? How big are the tiles (12x12, 14x14) already installed? If there is a tile of the same design that is bigger than the ones you have already installed then you can cut to fit width then cut the length to size to fit in the gap. Or you can try Dartman's suggestion, or, but this means removing the tile and start laying tiles from the tub towards the other wall. Lots of work though. Let me know.
