I haven't flown since the 90's, does that still count? :P When I did fly, it was international, and back then British Airways was awesome. I don't care what anyone says, international airlines beat the pants off domestic ones. They know how to treat their passengers well. Funny, the same is true with foreign car companies.

I totally agree with that. Another good international airline is Cathay Pacific.

SAA Rules!

I agree with Wizard. SAA operates both domestic and Intl. Flights, mostly Intl. and it is the best airline ever!

I hear BA is OK

KLM I hear is awesome.

El Al is shitty...!#@$$%@^@$%^@$^%$@#&^^@%@^% they suck.
only my good manners stop me from more vehment comments...

the ONLY good things they have going for them is their excellent security measures. by comparison, everyone else is a joke.

up till a few years ago it was just a problem for Israelis.
well, wake up western world to the brave new world of global terrorism...you can't ignore it anymore or pretent it's someone else's problem...

I don't think I would ever fly El Al, even if someone paid for my ticket. The thought of always being a target of terrorist would scare me.

You are safer on an El Al plane then on say, an American Airlines plane. El Al is the SAFEST airline in the WORLD. No buts. It is the safest.

Also, Israel has the best Military in the world, once again no buts. If a plane did get hijacked they would just go in and get everyone out.

That did happen once about 15 years ago. Some people hijacked an Israeli aircraft (maybe not El Al) and had it land in like Iran or Iraq or some terrorist supporting nation. Israel then sent out many air force aircraft loaded with infantry and medial workers and they got all the people out of the country. They flew a long time to go in and get everyone out, and they passed with flying colors.

Remember not to long ago when someone tried to hijack an El Al flight from Turkey to Tel Aviv? One security gaurd tackeled him to the ground before he got anywhere near the cockpit. There was also another security gaurd on-board.

Remember that all El Al pilots carry around guns in the cockpit, thats pretty good defense.

Remember when 3 people were killed in a shooting at the El Al ticket counter in Los Angeles? 3 people is not that bad. He was almost instantaneously tackeled to the ground by El Al Security Gaurds as well as Police, and California National Guardsmen.

I'm not really concerned about terrorist taking over the plane. I was thinking more in the lines of being a target of SAM's (surface to air missiles).

El Al is planning on putting in anti-missle systems.

i think the airplane was Air France on route to Paris.
it was kidnapped by Palestinian terrorsits and taken to Entebbe airfiled in Uganda (Africa).
Idi Amin (i beileve) the general-dicatator actually helped the terrorists.
the Israeli commando flew there in 4 Hercules C130 aircraft, took over the airfield where the airplane and hostages were, managed to get all the hostages back except for one that was killed by the terrorists during the takeover and one sick elderly woman who wasn't even there, she was taken to a hospital.
one casualty to the armed forces - Yoni Netanyahu, who was the commander of the commando unit. (brother of Binyamin Netanyahu, former Prime Minister here in Israel).
this whole operation has become a sort of legend and a mythos of Israeli culture. there was film made of it (in Holywood, not Israel).

anyway, like aviationwhiz said, El Al is the safest airline in the world. not buts.
and as for missiles, well, the same as hijacking - El Al is not the only target.
remember Pan Am - Lockerby, Scotland?

the only such occurence that i know of happened last year, an airplane (forget what airline, i think it was some Russian charter company), flying from Tel Aviv to Moscow (?) was shot down by a missile.

and no, it wasn't terrorists, it was shot by the army of one of the east-european countries, i forget which exactly (Ukraine maybe?).

they tried to avoid reponsibility for that, but it later became clear that it was a missile fired during some military exercise that accidentally shot down the plane.
the plane fell into the black sea. all passengers/crew lost.

AFAIK the scenario of a passenger jet being shot down by terrorists - that hasn't happened as yet.

i was talking about a movie that was made in the 70s about the real operation.
i'm not sure but i think there were a few famous actors there. and i'm not talking chuck norris level either.
