Hi guys, annoying newbie to upgrading here.

Can anyone tell me what "firmware" is in layman's terms ? At the momment I have an LG GCE-8160B CD RW and it's not madly fast. If "firmware" refers to the software it uses I was interested in seeing if mine is the latest version.

The latest firmware for your drive is 2.01 (released in May of last year). The following is a good resource for firmware issues:

By the way, your drive is a CD-RW drive, so it is more appropriate to post questions about it in the CD-R/CD-RW forum. But this isn't a big deal and you are a self-described novice, so don't worry that you made a small mistake.
