My Mad Dog 16X DVD takes about 40 minutes to RIP a movie,
and my Pioneer DVR-105 takes 15 minutes to Rip the same movie.

All the new DVD's drives slow to RIP?

Can anything be done about it?

DVD ROM drives without rip speed limitation rip Single Layer DVD in 4 minutes and Dual Layer DVD in 16 minutes .
Either this DVD ROM has rip speed limitation either you have forgotten to enable DMA ( it is much more likely ) on it or something like this which slows it at reading DVD .

Running the Intel Application Accelator. According to it, setup for
UDMA 2

Looks like a limitation of the drive. Will move it to my Promise controller
and see if it corrects the problem

You might try uninstalling/disabling IAA as well. It causes trouble for some people with optical drives.

Or was it the move to the Promise card that fixed it? By the way, putting optical drives on add-on controllers often causes problems itself. In general it is best to put your optical drives on the motherboard's IDE controller, and leave the add-on cards for the hard drives. They can make better use of the extra speed of the add-on cards anyway.

IAA difinitely causes problems. If installed, Lite-On 48x CD-ROM can't rip Audio at all.
