No it is false :o . 166S can rip movies at full speed . It can read Single Layer DVD VIDEO at 16X Max and Dual Layer DVD VIDEO at 8X Max .
Those saying it can only rip at 2X should enable DMA . Also it is true with very short files ( few megas ) or some ripping start you can encounter the 3X speed but this is not a constant speed .
You should be able to rip Single Layer DVD VIDEO in 4/6 Mn and Dual Layer DVD video in 16 Mn ( around twice data for ripping speed divised par two ) .

It is normal that DVD-ROM drives are slower at reading Dual Layer DVD VIDEO .

You want to know more about 166S ? Read my test . And advise those saying it can only rip at 2X that they are wrong :-? ( link to this topic and perhaps to my test  ) .

Btw, guys at The firmware page are working hard on firmwares for Toshiba drives. Looks like these babies can rip DVDs extremely fast. :o :P 8)

Good news . In my mind ripping limitation is/was the Toshiba drive main default . If this project works , perhaps Toshiba will become my favorite DVD-ROM choice .

Thanx Han .

Hijacker has just published patched firmwares without DVD speed limit on his page.

I've flashed my Toshiba SD-M1612 revA to J806 firmware. It really boosts reading and ripping speeds for DVD media + now my drive can read DVD+R(W) discs. Awesome! 8)

The 2x start speed limit for ripping applies only to some DVD recorders, i.e., Toshiba and Pioneer, and only for ripping CSS protected discs. Non-protected discs can be ripped at high speed with these recorders without firmware hacks.

DVD-ROM drives such as the JLMS(LiteOn) XJ-HD166S can rip CSS protected discs at the highest available speeds. They are not affected by this DVD recorder 2-4.8x speed limit . The DVD recorders that are affected seem to have hacked firmware available or being developed to overcome this limitation.

You better add the Sony 500A DVD burner to that list, it only rips DVD Video at 2x - even if it isn't CSS protected!

Toshiba DVD-ROM drives do have Rip speed limits on CSS protected discs.

oops - my fault. :o
i edited the title of that topic.
it's a FAQ i wrote, originally it was about how to post pictures in the forum. it was called "how to post pictures in cdrlabs forums" i think. but in lieu of cfitz's additional explanations further down, i thought it would be a good idea to chage the title, so as to help people find this info.
so i added the "linkinking to a specific post"...
funny considering i'm the proofreader :o

i'll go and fix it now
