I heard that Lite On drives rip at very good speed - just wanted to hear if anyone have tried the LTD-166S

its the drive i rip all my movies with, full 16x rip speed

Rip times are very good with this drive; it'll top-out at about 14x on single layer discs, and I believe somewhere around 8x for dual-layer discs. Expect about 7 minutes or so for single layer, and almost 20 for *FULL* dual-layer discs.

your welcome, personally its the best dvd-rom ive come across in a some time

i use it solely to rip movies

make sure you update it to latest firmware:

I have this drive... it takes me 40 minutes to rip a dual layer movie... 10-12 minutes to rip single layer movies.
Will updating the firmware to the latest version fix this?
Or is it a system limitation? I'm running a P3 1Ghz with 512mb ram.

DMA is enabled on the drive.
Does the updated firmware allow for faster ripping (like the unofficial Toshiba firmware)?
I will try updating the firmware and see what happens.

i don't think so, i think the LiteOn drives rip fast "straight out of the box" with original LiteOn firmwares.
it's just that some firmwares are better than others.

there's plenty of info on that page, read up. see which firmware is the best for you. also how you can "region free" your drive. but i don't think you'll gain any speed.

First off, let me say "Hello" to everyone here. Yes, I'm new to this forum. However, I'm not new to the world of multimedia. After much researching and debating, it has come to my attention that the general consensus favors the Lite-On 166S for its speed and compatibility. As for its ability to generally read various copyrighted/protected discs in all shapes and forms; it appears that there's still debate over that in comparison to other drives. Having read the majority of the posts in this forum and others like club cdfreaks, I've come to the above understanding. I sure hope that most would agree and help me out. I made the decision to purchase this drive today from www.3gplaza.com using pricewatch.com. The retail box for a black drive including shipping, taxes, etc... came to $31. Not Bad in my opinion for such a reputable drive! This drive will be my first Lite-On drive. Therefore, I would welcome any suggestions for generally what is considered as the best overall firmware for fast ripping of audio files, movies, etc.... If possible I would like the same firmware or firmwares to include the ability to make the drive region free as well. I realize that performance will be dictated by my system, its configuration, etc... I also realize that there are links to particular sites mentioned by various posts to consult. However, consulting and experience/application are two different things in my book. From this, the reason is obvious why I chose to post for help in this forum for the people here appear to have both. Anyhow, enough of this rhetoric. Those who can help in any manner, please let me know at your convenience. Your help is greatly appreciated, and I look forward for replies.

Try the latest (DS1C). It's available officially from www.jlms.com.tw or unofficially from my website (see my sig). The ones found on my website are unofficial and are the faster-burnt-disc versions (12x-14x by TDB and 16x by myself).

For region freedom, you have two options... use the LtnRPC tool (http://dhc014.rpc1.org/) (works with with any firmware, official or unofficial, old or new) (LtnRPC is what I would recommend) or use one of the region-free DS1C firmwares (see my site).
