JLMS XJHD166S, keeps spinning up, then spins down...

Hey guys, awesome forum you guys have running here. This is my first official post.

My Lite-ON (JLMS XJHD166S) DVD-ROM just stopped recognizing any media I put in it. It just keeps spinning up and down, up and down. After about 3 tries it stops. I LOVE THIS DRIVE, IT SO FAST, DONT LET ME DOWN!!!!!

I have already flashed the BIOS to DS1A using the newest version of MtkWinFlash (Tried both IDE and ATAPI Methods). The drive didn't work before I flashed it, so that could not be the cause.

ONE THING THOUGH.
I accidently enabled Nero ImageDrive, and it changed the letter of the DVD-ROM, temporarily. I disabled ImageDrive and I guess that is a major red flag......

Tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. Still no go.

I know this should be an easy solution. You guys are way too good to be stumped by this one!

Thanks,
jeeka

I think the drive is dead,my LTD-165H did the same thing when it died.Try removing the drive in Device Manager and rebooting,if that doesn't help try another IDE channel.

This sucks, My 162 did the same thing and that is why I bought the 166s...... I am beginning to wonder about the longevity and reliability of Lite-ON. 2 in a row? I barely use these things....... and they crap out on me in 8 months?!?!? boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

My original 163 is still going strong, my first 166 died after just over a year the same way. It started opening the tray slower and slower and finally wouldn't spinup enough to read anything, I think the spindle motor is pretty weak. I bought another 166 for 39 bucks so who cares, and I use the crap out of mine.

I'd recomend a Pioneer DVD-ROM, they are ultra reliable and have great build quality. You can get a Plextor PX-116A which is a re-badged Pioneer 120 for $39.50 at zipzoomfly. Look here.

Not too much more than a Lite-On 166S, and are a ton more reliable and has a ton higher build quality.

My LTD-163 is started to have problems with a SVCD disc I inserted the other day. Same symptoms initially, then it would hang trying to copy the .DAT file to the HD. It still performs fine ripping pressed DVDs though.

If it goes I'll replace it with another Lite-On drive, but this time in black for my new black case. The only reason I haven't considered replacing it before was because of the no-cache firmware for audio extraction it currently has.
