I initially backed up some of my DVD movies using DVD XCOPY EXPRESS on DVD+R media. Now I discover that one of my players does not support DVD+R media but it does support DVD-R media.

I thought it would be as simple as starting up Veritas RecordNow DX and choosing the option to make an exact copy of a DVD.

Unfortunately, when I try this, VeritasRecordNow DX will not recognize a DVD-R when I am prompted to insert blank media. I tried it several times on separate occasions. When I insert a blank DVD+R, the copy continues with no trouble.

In my case, I am forced to go back to the original and use DVD XCOPY EXPRESS to rip/re-compress, etc. to get the backup on a DVD-R media.

Why is it this complicated?

Download and install DVD Decrypter instead. Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD+R to your hard drive as an ISO file. Then pop in your DVD-R and use DVD Decrypter to write the ISO image to the new disc.

Quite simple.

Oh, and your DVD burner supports writing to DVD-R media, correct?

Yes, the DVD burner is a SONY DRU-510A which supports DVD+R as well as DVD-R.

I suppose it looks to see which type of media has been inserted and then it writes accordingly. I do not remember seeing anywhere that I can control the DVD+R or DVD-R setting.

I was just suprised that the Veritas DVD copy utility made a distinction between DVD+R and DVD-R then making an "exact" copy. That is pretty "exact". There must be a technical reason?

Since the DVD+R that I am trying to copy to DVD-R was created usign DVD XCOPY EXPRESS, I think DeCSS has already been run on the movie files. Shouldn't I be able to copy the contents of the DVD+R to the hard drive and then use Veritas RecordNow DX to then burn those files and folders back to a DVD-R???? I did not try this yet. There seems to be so many if's, and's, and but's involved in making DVD backups that I bet it would not be that simple.

You probably could, yes. But even though there may be no CSS, DVD Decrypter is still a good tool because it will rip everything in one image file then burn it back to a new disc. Almost one-click operation. And it should be an exact copy of the DVD+R disc, unlike if you did the way you suggest by copying to the hard drive.

There are subtle writing differances between -R and +R,it's best to copy contents to HDD then burn.
