what the buffer size of the Toshiba SD-M1712?

shoptoshiba.com says: 192Kb.
toshiba.com says: 192Kb.

on my drive, Nero InfoTool says: 128Kb.

wtf?

p.s. firmware J004 btw.

I am just making an assumption here: maybe there's a small bug in the drive's firmware that is not allowing programs to retrieve the buffer size.

could be.
that's why i'm asking this question.
anyone else with this drive? check your InfoTool.

the J004 firmware is hacked, BTW.

Why bother? It works just like SD-M1612 with 512 KB buffer...

how do you know it works the same ?
maybe the 1612 performs better ?

anyway, what does the buffer size matter in a DVD-ROM ? how does it affect performance ?

I have both drives.

Maybe, maybe not. It's not all about buffer size - drive's firmware and chipset has to know how to use it efficiently...

...just like hard drive's buffer. If you frequently access the same files, larger buffer size is favourable. If you're only transferring files from one place to anther, buffer size doesn't matter that much. Threrfore, 128 KB buffer is enough for "smart" DVD-ROM drives. And Toshiba SD-M1712 sure is one of them. :D
