hi

i want to buy a dvd ram compatible dvd rom that can read dvd ram from panasonic dvd recorder that ill buy , LITEON 166s/167t is not available only 163d (sony 1611) is available. other choices are

samsung 616Q,lg 8162b,asus e 616p1,benq 1650p/s.i want a player with fast rip capability to convert dvd into vcd and play in my car deck.

I think the LG *should* work, check on their site (www.lgeus.com) for specs. Is the Sony DDU1612 available? It's a rebadged Lite-On 165. Or maybe I could courier you one from India...

As far as I know, from the drives on your list, only the LG (like all LG drives) reads DVD-RAM. As for its ripping speed, I'd call it good, although not excellent. But that's mostly from reviews, I never owned one.

Oh, and a DVD-RAM cartridge is sort of like a DVD-RAM disk which you never remove from its box. It's used mostly to protect two-sided DVD-RAM media, and must be used in any reader/recorder WITH the cartridge. Naturally, the standard CD drives don't read those, not because it's a different format, but due to purely physical reasons.

i cant find dvd ram support, looks like i have to wait for the liteon 167t.
if i skip the dvd ram support which one is better ASUS e616 or lg 8162b.

What you have is the specs for LG-GDR8162BI. The specs for LG-GDR8162B say that it does read DVD-RAM:

http://www.lg.ca/downloads/specs/computer/GDR-8162B.pdf

Also, below is a link to a Russian review of the drive. Scroll down a bit to see the Nero InfoTool which shows the drive is capable of reading DVD-RAM. I think that's as safe as it gets. Their overall conclusion on the drive was good too.

Hello!

DVD-RAM compatible DVD-RomĀ“s are:

Toshiba 1612 and 1712
LG 8162
LiteOn 166S
MSI X48 (Combo-drive)

The MSI reads from 2x-4x, all other 2x

Well, if you include combo drives, throw LG GCC-4521B into the pack.
