Standalone DVD/CD/MP3 player?

I have a Samsung Noun N501 player that does not now recognize DVD-R/+R/RW discs anymore. When I got this thing about a year ago it read them flawlessly. But now it basically does not play any of the DVD-Video discs I have created.
Two questions:
1. Any suggestions on a fix? (Have the lastest firmware BTW.)
2. Any suggestions on a standalone player that reliably reads DVD-R/+R/RW and is a versatile MP3 player (i.e., will read playlists, do random play, etc.) and costs less than, oh, $75?
