CDRLabs brings you two short reviews today. Up first is a look at Toshiba's new 16x DVD-ROM, the SD-M1912. One of the first drives to come from the joint venture between Toshiba and Samsung, the SD-M1912 can read DVD's at 16x and CD's at 48x. On top of that it supports most CD and DVD formats, including DVD±R/RW and DVD-RAM.

Our resident "aviation wizard", Warren, has also put together a brief review of the Mapower KC-51 5.25” External USB 2.0 Enclosure. Is it a good solution for your CD or DVD writer? You'll have to read the review to find out.

If you have any comments or questions about the Toshiba SD-M1912 DVD-ROM or Mapower KC-51 Enclosure, please post them in the forum using the link provided below.

mmm...this drive looks more like a Samsung than a Toshiba!
firmware name is also Samsung-like.
i wonder if it'll be as easy for the guys @ rpc1.org to hack it - faster ripping, RPC I etc.

They already have a RPC hack for it. It would be nice if they could up the DVD-/+R read speeds to 8x or 12x though.

All of Toshiba's new drives seem to be very Samsung-like. Anyone know if Samsung also has a drive based on the same design as the 1912? I'm not too familiar with their DVD-ROM's.

Hello!

The version that you can buy in Germany is look like a Toshiba, totally different from the drive you reviewed.

But I don´t understand the 9/10 in the performance-test. It is too slow at DVD+/-R/RW, CD-RW (my old 1712 reads at full speed), Audio. I said a max. 7/10, mabe only 6/10.

Maybe you can make some short reviews of other DVD-Rom-drives like Asus 616P, Plextor PX 116, Aopen 1648 AAP, Teac DV 516 to compare this drive with.

Nice review! :D

But I noticed something strange.
On the features page you wrote:
Contrary to what we saw with InfoTool, DVDINFOpro shows that the drive can read DVD+R DL discs.
But DVDINFOpro also shows that the Toshiba can write DVD+R DL discs. :o
And apparantely it can also write Mt. Rainier CDs and it supports defect managment. #-o
