DVD-Rom, which one?

Hello!

I´m looking for a new DVD-Rom for a friend. These drives I found in my shop:

Philips 1650
Toshiba SD-M 1912
MSI D16 (I heard rumors that this drive can´t read DVD+R/RW?)

My favourite, the AOpen 1648AAP isn´t avaible this time, so I don´t know if I should take the Philips, MSI or Toshiba. The drive don´t need to read DVD-RAM.

Thanks

When I tested this drive, it had some problems with +R. I haven't gone back and checked to see if a new firmware fixed this.

If it was my choice, I'd pick the Toshiba 1912.

Hello!

Thanks, for the link,

I ordered the 1912 and i make some tests, how fast the drive reads DVD+-R/RW, VCD, SVCD usw. and compare it to my 1712.

No, i read the review at cdrinfo.com and it seems to be that the 167 is not so fast like a 166S when read copy-protected data-dics´s (Savedisk usw.)

And my 166S is horrorible loud and noisy, brrr

Hello!

I have the 1912, but I think it´s something wrong with it. The drive is extremly loud and whistles when it works. What´s your experiences?

I like my 167T, though I haven't had it long.

As for the 1912, it's a combination effort between Toshiba and Samsung (and if that wasn't public knowlege it'd be obvious from the drive faceplate). I used to like Toshiba's optical stuff. I've never cared for Samsung's, they make some awesome products (RAM chips, CRT/LCD monitors) but I don't think their optical drives rank as one of the things they do best.

Hello!

It was not the 1912, it was an other problem. The power-supply was defect, and after i change it, the DVD-Rom was quiet :)

Hello!

The drive was overall quiet, but when I insert a media the drives makes some strange noises, like a LiteOn.

It can read DVD-RAM (that´s important for me). Pressed DVD´s read it well, but not really fast. DVD-+R/RW it reads fast enough for me, but slower than my Lite 166S.

For CD(-R)´s it´s ok, but it could be faster with RW and audio.

I brought it to a colleague, he test it with different media (audio, CD, DVD....) and he will in the next 2 days make a big comparison test with some other drives like Aopen, Liteon, older Toshiba´s.
