vinnie97, they did get it right but I think you just got a dud drive like some people do with other stuff these days.
Ian, I have the Asus DVD-E616P3 OEM drive with the firmware it came with and am trying to flash to the latest. I put in a request at the Firmware Page for an OEM-to-retail flasher and then I'll be able to flash to the latest firmware. It seems to work fine so far for CD-Rs and it played a "Matrix: Revolutions" fine in PowerDVD5. I've been using EAC to rip music off some bad CD-Rs and sometimes it rips a song that my Lite-On DVD SOHD 16P9S did not; I haven't tried it the other way 'round yet though.

I'm looking for a quiet DVD drive and cannot find some of the drives discussed here.
Edit: I found a source for the Aopen 1648. Also found a place to order the the ASUS DVD-E616P3.
Has anyone used or heard anything about these drives:
ASUS DVD-E616A (I can't find an E616P2)
Toshiba SD-M2012c (SD-M1912 is getting harder to find)
these last 2 are currently available/listed at Newegg.
Any thoughts on these would be appreciated, thanks.

I don´t know the 616A, maybe a typo?
The 616P2 is very similar to the AOpen 1648 AAP/Pro, the 616P3 is with a MediaTek-chipset and can read DVD-RAM @3x.
The Tosh 2012 have the same specs like the 1912. It´s qiet, but very slow with DVD-Video (2x) and recordable DVD-/+R/RW (max 6x), it can read DVD-RAM and don´t have problems with my 1912.
If speed is important for you, you should get an AOpen or Asus.
The LiteOn 16P9S seems to be a good drive with very good error-correction, but all LiteOns I had were very loud

Thank you for your thoughts, Gabe, most appreciated.
The ASUS E616A is not a typo. Info from ASUS can be found here:

Any idea who makes the chipset in the AOpen 1648 AAP/Pro?
Reputation for being loud is what keeps me from getting Lite-on.

AOpen AAP uses ALi-chipsets, like some Pioneer
