Older DVD-ROMs read DL discs?

I've checked here and at CDFreaks and haven't found much information on this.
I want to know if older DVD-ROMs are able to read DL discs burned on a DVD burner.
I'm mostly interested in this for data DVDs, not movies.
I don't have a Double Layer capable burner yet. (I have a Plex px708A)
I have 2 older Toshiba DVD-ROMs and am wondering if they could read DL data discs
The Toshibas are:
SDM1202
SDM1402

I also have an OEM Lite On DVD-ROM [ XJ-HD166S]
I just found out the Lite On is capable of reading DL discs by flashing to latest firmware [D166SDS1E]

But what about the Toshibas?
I want to know if these drives could read the DL discs before I get a new burner that burns DL discs.
Thank You,
Jon

using Nero InfoTool, my Toshiba SD-M1712 doesn't read DVD+R DL.
but then again that ony shows what the drive says it can do, not necessarily what it can actually do.

Hello!

I think it´s no problem if you have a DL-writer that set the DVD-Rom-flag. If the writer mark the DL as DVD+R DL it could be a problem
