I have a JLMS XJ-HD166S with DS1E firmware, under Windows XP SP2. Until now I always could K-Probe scans with the limitations of a DVD reader, but it's better than nothing and I can get an ideia of the burning quality.
But today, without no reason, and I haven't changed anything on my system.
First I thought my NEC 2500 DVD was having some hardware problem and was burning bad. But then I scanned some DVD-R/+R discs that I had previously burned and scanned sucessfuly with low PI/PIF error levels.
Now the 166S reports always reports very high error levels, and I've tried several media, and I'm sure they're OK.

Is my drive faulty? Or there is any other explanation?

How are your CDSpeed Readback scans? Do a transfer rate test in CDSpeed and if it's a smooth curve, don't worry.

Lite-On DVD-ROM's are notorious for inaccurate error reporting.

But until now I never had scans like these ones (only on Princo discs after 6 months burned). Now I always get 1400 PI level on every scan, with different discs. Isn't that strange?

I heard that the DVD-Roms show lower error-rates than the writers. And look here, in this thread are some scans with a 166s

Have you a friend with a drive that can test the writing quality? Maybe a Plextor, Benq or Liteon?

Yes, I have a friend with a BenQ 1620 and I've tested some discs are they're all fine. Example: my 166S reports 1400 PIE level on a Prodis S03 disc, and BenQ 1620 reports 50 (maximum). As you can see, there's something wrong with the drive, I always scanned my discs and never had this high levels.
