burned a backup of a movie with my BenQ DW1620 B7T9 onto TDK 8x DVD+R TY T02.
i checked the transfer rate on the Toshiba DVD-ROM (see below) and was alarmed. but when i did a transfer rate at 12x and 8x, both on the Toshiba and on the BenQ, the curve was smooth and nice. see pics below, also Disc Quality.
did another burn - first with DVD Decrypter, second with Nero (to rule out the software as an issue) results basically the same.

so what, the Toshiba is a picky reader?
anyone else with this drive, what's you experiences with it ?

yeah, i know that J004 is a hacked firmware (rip-lock removed).

Never had a problem, great reader.

The 1612/1712 are real picky with the modded FW. With original FW these drives are very slow readers with burned DVD-media, so you rarely have problems

I've noticed Toshiba SD-M1712 doesn't like TY DVD+R media very much.

i'll try to burn the same stuff to Verbatim 8x DVD+R i've got (Made in India) and see what happens.

Try DVD-R.

in a way that's a good thing - helps me test burns to see how good they are.

did you mean TY DVD-R or DVD-R in general?
i've only had Verbatim media till a short while ago, and my (only) burner BenQ DW1620 didn't like the Verbatim 8x DVD-R much.

As far as I know TY doesn't make DVD-R. I use Verbatim and Fuji and Toshiba likes them.

My DVD-R Fuji's are made by Prodisc - they are not from Japan for sure. I prefer Verbatims from Taiwan. I'll post details later, when I come back home.

Fuji sold in the past +R and -R from TY, now the most Fujis are Ritek

Plextor and Verbatim Pastel -R are also from TY

well, it looks like i'll just have to live with the fact that my Toshiba DVD-ROM doesn't like TY DVD+R

since it seems my BenQ doesn't like this media anyway (poor results) i guess it's not too bad.
gonna try now my second TDK TY DVD+R spindle, and see maybe the first one was a bad batch.

well, this is getting weirder.

here's another scan of a TDK 8x DVD+R made by TY - YUDEN000 T02, burned at 8x. but this is from the second spindle i have. the pic in the first post is of a disc from the first spindle.

now the transfer rate test on the Toshiba DVD-ROM at 16x looks much better!!!
note - it's only 3.93GB, it looks like it's starting to slow down at the end.

so...why is the Toshiba reading this TY DVD+R much better than the last?

hmm...quite a difference between the discs from the 2 spindles.

and here's another one:
Sony 8x DVD-R SONY08D1 burned at 8x.

transfer rate tests at 12x and 16x very ugly!

i really don't know what to make of it

the Toshiba is picky on a variety of media when reading at high speeds (> 8x) ???
do you know of other media that reads (or doesn't) well at < 8x on this drive?

does it mean these burns are'nt good? or should i disregard transfer rate tests on the Toshiba at > 8x as an indicator of a good/bad burn?
