TEAC's new 52x CD-ROM has started to show up on Pricewatch. They're OEM versions of course. Anyone gonna pick one up?

Hmm, are you sure they're in stock? Just a few days ago I asked German tech support when will this drive be available in Europe and the answer was "keep checking our site, can't tell you for sure when"...

Supposedly. I'm waiting for them to show up on Newegg's website before ordering one.

Some results I found for the Teac 52x CDROM drive:

http://www1.oc.com.tw/forums/msgexcel.a ... 1&vt=0&n=2

Just in case those pictures won't show up, the person tested DAE using a 75 minutes CDR: avg. out 23.56x, starts as 14.12x and ends as 30.98x.

Data testing using 82 minutes CDR: avg. out 41.05x, starts at 15.05x and ends at 55.14x.

Drive is made in China.

I have the Teac CD-552E and sure enough, DAE is limited to 32x :(
But then again, when the Teac CD-540E was released, DAE was only 10x and after a few months they increased it to 40x with a new firmware :)

What about Ultra DMA mode in Windows 2000/XP. Does it work without issues, especially at Audio CD playback? Is the drive noisy?

Ultra DMA works fine in Windows 2000. No probs found with audio playback (both analog and digital).
It looks nicer than the 540E and has two buttons (not that I care :)).
The noise level is as can be expected from a 52x drive. Not really annoying, sounds more like a fan but makes more noise than the LiteOn LTD163.
Speed settings: 4x,24x,32x and 52x.
Only 128KB buffer.
The only annoying thing I found is that it does not respond immediately when you push the tray.
But my drive has a beta firmware so hopefully this will be fixed.

Sure :)

That could be improved but the Teac CD-540E was limited to 10x DAE when it first came out and after a new firmware release it was able to do DAE at 40x which was incredible fast in those days.
Let's hope they do the same with the CD-552E :)
