I think afreey is pretty much gone. If you go to www.afreey.com.tw there is a link for chinese or english. If you click the english link it takes you to afreey.com which seems to have been inhabited by some junk domain reseller. The chinese link works fine but you can't read a damn thing on the site unless you know the language.

Not only has Afreey disappeared, but their CD-ROM firmware is not upgradable and was never flashable.

Anyway, if you want to read the Chinese on the Afreey site, all you have to do is use AltaVista, and you will get some really interesting translations like:

10X DVD-ROM - The luck calls the gallbladder cedar breeds the name. :o

52x / 56x CD-ROM - Lies prone the side knack, pale strong corrupt 32x, 60 lead the card. 8)

Thank God we have this wonderful resource. How else would we be able to interpret the information on the site. :D

Affrey cd-roms are not firmware upgradable, you must physically change thee bios chip if you really want it to change. Its the same with Asus drives !

Thats odd. I've upgraded the firmware on their 56x CD-ROM.

Ian,

How did you do that? Do you still have this firmware upgrade? What version is it? 8)

Seriously, though, I think you must be remembering some other drive than the Afreey CD-2056E. :)

I have a 56x Afreey CD-ROM and I've never seen firmware for it anywhere. As far as I know, they have never used flash ROM's in their CD-ROM drives. For this reason CD-ROM firmware was never offered on their site when it was operational.

Afreey sent the upgrades to me when I was working on the review of the drive. I agree, I've never seen them available anywhere either. I don't remember what version.. 21 or something?

Yes, I remember reading your (excellent as usual :)) review of the Afreey 56x CD-ROM when it first came out. Maybe Afreey sent you a specially equipped test model with a flashable ROM?

My Afreey CD-2056E was manufactured Nov. 2000, firmware 22.

Poor Afreey. They were a good company. I think they put too much money into the multi-beam laser concept and when that didn't work out, they got sucked under

I'm curious - why didnt Afreey make Recorders? I looked at thier website and all I saw was CD-ROM and DVD playback-only units. I think they would have would have stayed in business had they done that. Sounds to me like they were a small company... BTW I never saw them on sale anywhere in Texas, (Fry's, the major chains, or any local PC dealer)
