backup trouble

Hi -

I'm trying to make a backup of "Barbershop 2" and am
having some trouble. The first try I got "failed to
read/overlapped I/O" error. The disk looks
clean/unscratched so I exchanged it at the store thinking
something else must be the problem. But I'm getting the
same error at the same point (52% in). I'm using win98,
dvdshrink 3.1.4/7 and anydvd 3.2 (and tried anydvd 3.8.2).

I found a couple threads here so tried
dvd-something-or-other to rip to HD first. It also fails. I also
checked the dvdshrink guide/forum and the only tip I found
was making sure I/O-something was deselected - mine's
grayed out so it's obviously not enabled.

Before and after trying backing up this movie I'd backed up
three or four others with no problems at all. Anyone know
what's going on, like some brand-new CP?

You sure you backed up some movies before without any problem on Win98? I think FAT32 filesystem has file size limit of 2GB and this could be problem as DVD backup image files are over 4GB.

you are correct, anything non NTFS file system is limited to 2GB files

I take it you mean the dvdcrypter part? I have backed up
many by writing straight to my DVD burner but the only one I
recall writing to the HD was using dvdshrink (ended up being
around 4G total in a number of files).

What I was really interested in was why it would fail (writing
straight to the burner) the same way in the same place; or
maybe how come dvdcrypter failed when trying to rip to HD
(when it aborted I removed the files left behind and there
were multiple files so I'm not sure why address space is an
issue).

what we meant it that 1 single file can't be more then 4GB in size

if it fails from direct burn meaning dvd to dvd its probably becuase the writer isn't receiving the data from the dvd-rom fast enough

Thanks - I understood that but asked because I don't
understand what it has to do with my problem (burning
from reader to burner). And dvdcrypter created numerous
files - not one.

I don't think that matches the symptoms I'm seeing: two
different "Barbershop 2" discs failing the same way at the
same place (52% read). And after burning 70+ discs with
the same hardware/software over the past couple months
without a single problem like this (incl. that I'd successfully
burned before/after these two) I'm not too sure it has
anything to do with hardware...

id run like a scandisc with cdspeed 2k to see if it reads it all the way through

or if it decrypts to hard drive, its probably not the disc

you should be running NTFS files system anyways, unless your running a Non windows NT distro

Thanks. I ran scandisk but no change. I found some
dvdshrink forums and I'm not the only one with this kind of
problem (reading fails in the middle of the disk). Some
people are saying it's cp, some sort of intentional bad
sectors (or however they do it.) And since I'm running
win98 under vmware within Linux I think there was some
issue (for me) about running ntfs. I've had no trouble until
now so I don't think I'm going to start changing stuff.

What pisses me off is this is the same shit we had to go
through with copy-protected software 10 or so years ago
(where they were finally forced to drop it but I doubt that's
going to happen with these movie a*holes). I'm going to
put a snotty note in the case, return it and see if I can get
my money back.
