Sorry the question is off topic a bit, but it does relate to then burning on my DVR 107.

Is there a simple FAST program that takes a standard dual layer movie dvd and rips the entire movie into one 700 - 1000MB avi file that is in a divx of xvid form.

The key idea is a simple program and one that is FAST. If you know of one please list it and give me an idea of how long it takes with your machine to convert a normal 2hour movie to the .avi file.

I want to archive all of my Kid's DVD's into .avi's that I can burn on my blank DVD-R and DVD+R disks ( say 5 at a time ) that we can then watch on my Philips 642 Divx and XVID DVD player with the kids while retaining the quality of the original disks since they will then be stored and unused.

Frankly though: with the low cost of DVD media (Boxing Day is coming up) why not just keep them on DVD? It would save you hours of processing & audio/video sync. Usually 7 or 8 hours to do a SBC DivX on my P3 1ghz with 768mb PC133 ram

If you really want to DivX them, Auto-Gordian Knot is probably the way to go. I've never used it though. I still like the quality I can get with NanDub and Smart Bitrate Control DivX 3. But it takes a lot longer (2 passes). The quality is there if you put the effort into it.

On a sidenote: www.tigerdirect.ca has pretty cheap DVD spindles.
And www.futureshop.ca and www.bestbuy.ca have pretty good sales starting on Christmas Day. If you can hold off until Xmas, then buy the DVD's from Futureshop or Bestbuy.ca

I can recommend Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK). It is an easy to use front end to a suite of pgms used for the various stages of encoding... I've been using an older version for a while now and it is so simple to use as to be almost foolproof, and has encoded DivX files for me which play back on the DVP642 fine.

Usually takes around 3-4 hours (XP1800+ 256mb ram) to do a 2 pass DivX which maintains excellent quality on even a single 700mb CDR. I just read that XVid codec may be a bit quicker so I'll try that next time. It has an option to turn off the PC once finished so you can set it going at night and forget it.

A warning, the latest beta release 1.84 apparently has some minor spyware in it - see http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/autogk.htm for info/removal instructions. Earlier versions (which I'm using) do not have the spyware (inc the latest stable release).
