I think it's turned off by default for legal reasons (not that it saved DVD Decryptor in the long run!). By turning off the PUOs, you allow people to skip over all the legal crap at the beginning of a DVD... making it a "circumvention mechanism" by default.

By defaulting it to leave the PUOs, it's not circumventing anything.

At least, these have always been my assumptions (since in my experience, DVD Decryptor flipped it back every time I upgraded!)...

Does anyone know if the driver selected (spti, aspi, elby...etc..) has any impact on the write quality, or is it soly for ripping purposes.

OK thanks.

another question:
what are the settings you change from the defaults (apart from removing PUOs) ?

No it doesn't,it's how your device communicates with the OS.Win9x/Me uses WINASPI32.dll,2000/XP uses SPTI.I wouldn't mess with it.

@dodec,
This is how I set up DVDDecrypter:
Remove all PUOs.
Untick all file associations(.img,.nrg,etc).
Disable Auto Insert Notification.
Set Buffer Size to ~75MB.
Tick Ignore Read Errors and set read/write retries to 0.
Untick Create MDS file(if you use FAT32 then leave ticked).
Set Transfer Length to 32KB.

Some recent DVD's have ARCCOS protection that DVDDecrypter can't handle so use DVDFab Decrypter(free) instead.

thanks burninfool.

can you tell me why you chose those values Transfer Length (32K - that's the minimum), Buffer size (why not larger? why not the larger - the max 256M ?)
also why Tick Ignore Read Errors and set read/write retries to 0 ?

also, what is the 'Remove IFO Structure Protection' option, why is it enabled by default in File mode but disabled by default in IFO and ISO modes ?

burninfool, the thing is if you want you can use the driver from anydvd (elbycdio) and that will work with any type of css since that driver is updated. I guess you don't use any other driver, so you wouldn't know if that effects the burning operation. I wanted to know if the driver that is used for reading a dvd is also used for writing the movie, or is DVD D. simply using the engine in nero. LUK! would know :D

@dodec,
I use 32KB transfer length because in my experience it rips faster than 64KB.
Buffer Size uses your RAM to buffer and is used for writing,Nero and RecordNow are set at 71/75MB.You can set it higher but I doubt it would help.
I tick ignore read errors and set read/write errors to 0 because if the disc is scratched or the blank is damaged I don't want DVDDecrypter to cycle forever.
As for remove structure protection,I have no idea why Lightning_UK set it that way.It's best to set all to Remove Structure Protection.

@eric93se,
Write quality depends on the drive/firmware/media/burn engine and has nothing to do with the ASPI layer.If you want to change it more power to you but it won't change the write quality.From what I've read DVD Decrypter uses a burn engine similar to Prassi...which is one of the best in the business.
BTW...Lightning_UK has a new website and tool called Imgburn: www.imgburn.com

Removing PUO's the ODD time will result in a menu that doesn't work correctly, but they are rare.

I think he just means "odd" with capitalization for emphasis. Thus, "odd time" means "rarely" or "infrequently" and "ODD time" means "very rarely" or "very infrequently". In other words: "In very rare circumstances, removing the PUO's will result in a menu that doesn't work correctly."

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the greetings. By odd I did indeed mean very rarely, perhaps 1 in 50.
On another note, by not having DVDD create an mds file as suggested above, you won't have the layer break info required for the great success rate in burning +DL's that ImgBurn & previously DVDDecrypter have. Programs (including IB & DVDD) will find other spots for a LB flag if there's no MDS file, but if there is a mds file, it uses the exact lb spot as the original, hence the high success rate with DL's.

what is the .MDS file except for this layer break info?
i've ripped a single-layer DVD and have both .ISO and .MDS files.

On a single layer rip, the mds file isn't important. It's critical if your going to do a DL backup of obviously a DVD9. If your doing an ISO Read/Write of a DVD5 though, make sure you choose the mds file to burn. Actually, if a mds file exists, DVDD & Imgburn will automatically select it for you instead of the ISO you selected, older versions of DVDD would have a little pop-up "scolding" you for not selecting the mds file (all in fun by the author), and would then select the mds anyway.
