i burned the same ISO image to DVD-R with ImgBurn 1.3 and CDSpeed 4.51.1, the burn quality of CDSpeed seems better. scans below.

i haven't tested this thoroughly, but it seemed to me more than once that when i did a quality scan of certain media, it wasn't always as good as the test burns i did on the same media (before starting to use it regularly). the test burns are with CDSpeed.

i've never considered before the influence of the burning program on the burning quality.

anyone else encountered this ?
MediumRare, i know you use CDSpeed for burning images. can you make a test burn and compare ?

here are the 2 scans. same image, same media (same spindle), same burn speed etc.
(note: this is fake TY)
when i have more images of which i need more than 1 copy i'll test this again and see what happens.

It's an extra step to create an image file so I can burn it with Nero CD-Speed. I do this because the trace of the burning speed is then recorded on the media and this shows up on quality scans with CD-Speed. I'm an "information junky":wink:- otherwise I wouldn't bother and would just do a burn with Nero itself. (OT: storing this information directly within Nero would be a wonderful enhancement). In contrast to other people, I have no issues with Nero (6.6).

I suspect you're just seeing a normal variation in media quality- esp. if these are "fake" TY (it's really only ~30% with 2 PIF spikes near the end). In cases like this, I tend to do additional scans to see if the problem is reproducible (I've seen a factor of 5 or more in PIE levels in repeated scans with my old SOHW-1213S). However, if you're seeing this on a regular basis, it's worth looking into.

I'll give it a try when I have some more time. I've been rather busy at work the last while and developing a display tool for KProbe results in my "spare time". And this weekend I have to help my wife with setting up an exhibition, so I don't know if I'll get around to doing this test.

1. what do you mean "an extra step"? do you mean when you're making data DVDs?
BTW how do you do that? which program do you use to make an ISO image of the data files?

2. you also get the drive and firmware recorded on the media.

I don't use ISO's- the images I burn are normally .NRG's, generated by (what else?) Nero.
Almost everything I burn starts out as a bunch of files on my hard drive (often they reside in a VIDEO_TS folder :wink:

), so going via image file is always one step more than just just burning a compilation.

The drive used to write a disc is available on every DVD- at least in a rudimentary way.

You can see it with Nero. Click on the "Info" icon and then "Shift Control Refresh" to display the "Enhanced Disc Information".

This shows a wealth of infomation (including the ADIP with MID-Information). Look for "Disc Control Blocks"- there will be a lot of these entires. The first one shows information about the drive reading this info in the Vendor-ID. In my case, the LiteOn SHM-16P6S is identified as its Sony equivalent:

(this text is stored in the firmware, version MV8Q in this case).

The other entries all apply to the drive that wrote the disc, so to definitely identify it, it's easiest just to jump to the end of the displayed list to find this information, in this case:

1. do you find that there's any difference if you burn a DVD video your way: burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS to an .nrg image and then that to disc (with CDSpeed) vs. simply burning the DVD Video content directly with Nero ?
some people say Nero's Video DVD aren't quite compliant and sometimes make problems, i was wondering if it makes any difference how you burn the stuff.

i can't see in either any idication of which drive burned the disc.
maybe it's a software feature?

1. I haven't seen a difference since a finalizing bug in CD-Speed was eliminated. I know that there have been reports on incompatibility with Nero video DVD's. The only confirmed one I've seen is re. short VOB's: see http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthr ... adid=45025 (alexnoe occsionally refered to this in normal acerbic style).

2. Your information shows that one shouldn't make sweeping conclusions from limited data. [-X

All recorded DVD's (-R, +R, +RW, +RDL), I've looked at have had this information, in particular those I didn't burn myself (Sony DRU-510A, Philips, NEC, Samsung), so I assumed that the information is always present. It may be that they were all burned by Nero and that Nero and/or Nero CD-Speed add this information. Or maybe only LiteOn drives report it?

In any case, if you're not seeing this information, it's not universal. Someone else with better background knowledge or greater variety of burners/burning programs will have to nail this down. My information is apparently too one-sided.

Same thinking here which is why my main burning program is CDSpeed for the past year or two now. Guess Nero still does not store metadata of the burn unlike CDSpeed.

Anyway, is there a good way to use CDSpeed to burn proper dual layer images (and its metadata of the burn with it) since CDSpeed does not make use of the MDS file unlike Imgburn/DD?
