MOHAA Spearhead Backups

I am running into a problem backing up my Spearhead game. I used clony xxl and it told me that the copyright protection was Safedisc V2 not 2.5 like Allied Assault. Anyways, the game burns fine, and installs fine, but when I go to use the disc as the play disc it just tells me that there is a problem and that they need to contact microsoft and had to shut the program down. If I use the original disc it plays just fine, so I know the install worked ok, but for some reason I can't use the burned disc as my play disc. Does anyone know what the heck that is all about? I backed up my copy of MOHAA the same way and everything worked just fine, but for some reason I can't seem to get a play disc to work and I have tried burning it several times. If anyone has any suggestions please help!! Thanks.

The game uses SafeDisc 2.8. What programs are you using to backup the game? I suggest BlindRead to create an image (Make sure to tell it to use Bin/Cue as the Output format) and Fireburner to write the image. In order to have a working backup, your burner must support correct EFM encoding. To check whether or not it does, please see this list: http://www.elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/writers/a.html. By the way, what burner are you using, how is it connected, what version are your ASPI drivers, and what version of Windows are you using?

I should have been a little more informative about my software I guess. I am using a Lite-on 52x24x52, the new one, and yes it does do correct EFM encoding. I am running windows XP, and to burn the program I used Clony XXL to check it and clone cd version 3.0.8.2. I haven't used blindwrite before, so I am a little hesitant. I thought about updating my version of Clone CD I just don't like the newer versions as much. Do you have any suggestions on getting around safedisc V2.8? I didn't even know they had come out with a new version of safedisc, I thought they were still on version 2.5x.

Clonecd doesn't handle safedisc 2.8 right, even the newer version. The BlindWrite suite which includes BlindRead is a great program made by VSO software that can create images of all of the current copy protections.

Here are some links to download the BlindWrite suite (30 day trial) and Fireburner:
BlindRead: http://www.blindwrite.com/download/blindwritefull_link1.html
Fireburner: http://www.fireburner.com/fb217we.exe

Read: BlindRead
Burn: Fireburner

When you make the image in BlindRead, the only setting you need to change is the output format, which should be bin/cue.

I have made working backups of many SafeDisc 2.8 games using the same burner and BlindRead/Fireburner to create and burn the image.

Good Luck!

ok, I have never used blindwrite or blindread before, so I downloaded it and tried it out. It seemed to make the image ok, but I can't seem to read the discs after I burn them with blindwrite, and I can't even get Fireburner to find the right file, when I go to the folder where I made the image, fireburner crashes and locks up. Can I just read the image with blindwrite and burn it, or does fireburner work better?

I just used blindread and then blindwrite and MOHAA Spearhead works just fine now, thanks for the tip. As for fireburner, it has crashed my system several times, has whacked out all autorun functions, and never worked for me once!! I am not impressed with fireburner, and I reccommend all to stay away unless they absolutely need to run this program, and even then think about giving up computers forever instead.

Can't you just use Nero to burn the .bin file?

Nero supports it.

I tried that and fireburner had screwed up several of my settings so I had to uninstall fireburner first. I burned it using blindwrite even though I could have burned an image with Nero. My point is that Fireburner is crap!

keep cool
