hello all

just a quick question if everything seems to work fine why should i need to enable the aspi layer

I have copied things with clony xxl and apart from the speeds being reduced i cant see any difference
I have been looking at the forum for a while ran the aspichk and it says i dont have the write drivers, and have downloaded the aspi adeptec 4.71.2 driver but have not run it.

am i better of not trying to fix something that is not broken.

Yes, keep Adaptec's ASPI in a dusty corner. If a certain program needs ASPI, it will tell you so...

If everything works fine then "don't fix it if it ain't broke".

I installed Adaptec's, Feurio and Nero's ASPI and I think it "screwed" up my system somehow. I don't know, maybe I was a bit reckless.

I used forceASPI to install a 4.6 of adaptecs aspi layer to try some dvd/cd software to read info form my drives, I found that randomly after exiting a nero burn session the system would reboot or BSOD with a weird error at times.

used forceaspi again to kill the aspi layer and not a problem since.

I can't remember if I ever ran ForceASPI or not. How can I tell? Right clicking on WNASPI32.DLL in c:\windows\system32 shows version 4.6.0.1021 and says it's Adaptec. As does ASPI32.SYS. Would that confirm I did run it? If so, how can I put the default WinXP ASPI back?

Running aspichk.exe shows:

That's how you can tell. You got back info saying you had Adaptec ASPI 4.60 installed. XP doesn't install an ASPI layer, so you either ran ForceASPI, or another program to install it.

I'd use ForceASPI to remove ASPI, and then reinstall it. If that still gives an error, try removing and then installing from the original Adaptec 4.60 install file. That's what I had to do, as ForceASPI would fail on my system. If you use the original Adaptec install file for 4.60, you need to have a qualifying Adaptec product for the installer to run.

Some people say not to use ForceASPI since it can cause problems. True?

Nero install its own ASPI DLL in its own program directory. It does not install a system-level ASPI layer.

ForceASPI is probably the safest way to install system-level ASPI, since it is easy to completely remove it if you do run into problems.
