The question on MY mind is why does it support 4x DVD-RDL, when the official minimum speed for the format is supposed to be 4x

I'm waiting for Pioneer to email me about those specs. Last time I posted specs early, their lawyers crawled up my ass.

Haven't burned any CDs for myself in well over 2 years. I say good ridance!

It'd also be nice to say to my friends that ask me to burn them a cd "Sorry, I CAN'T burn cds on my pc!"

Yes, but when people are shelling out $500-$1000 for a drive, they're buying it for its Blu-ray support.. not so they can burn mix CD's.

It's going to be more for people in business markets looking for high volume data storage... and possibly people in the film industry looking for HD dailys.

ok so im working at best buy today, remember im in the computer department

i take this "drive" off the shelf and look at it, says it can burn cds? whats this thing about cd "burning" ive been hearing so much about?

and i guess you can even now erase cds and re-record back on them?

I doubt few, if any, of the initial drives will be available at Best Buy. As dolph said, they're aimed at businesses, not Joe Consumer.

Does anyone know what the rotational speed of a BD-R/E disc is when reading/writing at 2x? At the inner edge? outer edge? Just trying to figure out what the maximum read/write speed potential would be for this.

If 2x = 9MB/sec then 16x would mean 72MB/sec. I benchmarked a 200GB hard drive I bought a while ago and at most it would read at 60MB/sec, sequentially. I hope they come up with speedier hard drives by then.

Good question. I was hoping the CD Speed screenshot Erik Deppe posted at CD Freaks would show that, but it doesn't.

Looks like I'm going to answer my own question.

From this CDFreaks article ( http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/186/4 )

A constant rotation speed of 10.000 RPM, which is the current upper limit for optical drives, will result in 12x BD but only 9x HD-DVD. This means that a HD-DVD must rotate faster to reach the same transfer rates.

If you go back two pages in the above article it says that 1x for both formats is about 36 Mbps, or about 4.5MB/sec. So at 10,000 RPM we could probably expect a maximum of 54MB/sec from Blu-Ray and around 41MB/sec for HD-DVD.

Pioneer Europe NV emailed me, asking that we remove the pictures of their drive. Since they asked nicely and didn't make legal threats, I complied.

I think that's a good choice. I don't think you were wrong in putting the pictures up... but it's important to show Pioneer that they'll get more flies with honey then lawyers. :wink:
