Philips also plans to release a Blu-ray drive in the second half of the year.

Press Release

The new Philips TripleWriter (SPD7000) showcases Philips’ ability to integrate PC products and technologies into the consumer electronics realm. The drive features recording and playback capabilities of all popular optical storage formats including CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc, which allows users to select their media of choice depending on the preferred application.

Philips’ TripleWriter features a 2x (72 Mb/s continuous data-rate) read and write speed on
BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE media. The drive reads and writes a variety of legacy media including CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

Take note that unlike the Pioneer BDR-101A, the TripleWriter supports reading and writing of CD's. Am I the only one that thinks the BDR-101A might be outdated very quickly?

I think your right, but of course it may just be firmware for some added features, except cdrw support I'd bet. Guesss this also means BenQ will get a version sometime :) Wont be buying anything till price of unit and media is acceptable, plus DRM must be defeated.

I've heard that Pioneer's is going to be about ~$1000 when it ships. Combine that with media that costs $15-$60 and I think I'll stick to normal DVD's for awhile.

yikes @ the drive price. The $15 for, I assume, 25GB discs isn't too surprising or asinine.

Ian said $15-60 per disc.
even at $15 for 25GB, it's still $3 per 5GB, quite a bit more expensive than DVD+/-R.

Better to compare against the $2/8.5GB DVD+RDL I think in this case  (I'm talking about Verbatim DVD+RDL of course, since I don't register Memorex or RiData DVD+RDL as working media).

Yeah, the one in the picture looks more like an OEM BenQ.. which it probably is.

yeah, i was thinking too that it looks like a BenQ...not surprising really.
not it's just a question of time: when will we see (cheap) BenQ BlueRay drives?
