Unlike HP, it doesn't sound like Microsoft is influencing LG. I have a feeling this is due to the patent sharing deal they have with Toshiba and/or that they're rumored to be working on a combo Blu-ray/HD DVD drive.

a combo drive would be cool.
but wasn't there some talk a while back about this not being possible, the patent holders aren't letting that happen (Samsung wanted to make a combo drive) ?

Yeah, but I wonder if LG can get around that by sharing patents with Toshiba.

as i recall (i could be mistaken) the patent holders from both sides didn't want to play. Toshiba is only one side.
ho hum...we'll wait and see.
personally i'm sure that sooner or later (probably later) there will be combo drives (or perhaps we should say dual-format drives).
